HubSpot's 20-Week Severance Kills the 5-Day Blitz. Source Its EMs in Waves

HubSpot's Oct 6 cut targeted management layers, and its severance runs to May 2027. How to source its displaced engineering leaders in the US and Dublin.

HubSpot's displaced engineering leaders are in no hurry, and if you contact them in week one you reach them when they have the least reason to reply. On Oct 6, 2026, HubSpot said it would cut nearly 660 roles, about 7% of staff, in a reorg that targeted management layers. The severance terms and Ireland's consultation rules mean people will leave slowly, through the end of Q1 2027. The ones worth calling are senior enough to wait you out.

What did HubSpot actually cut on Oct 6?

HubSpot is cutting nearly 660 roles in a reorganization aimed at management layers. It is also replacing its Hub-based product structure with teams built around customer outcomes. The company has not published a breakdown by title, department or country, so the accurate phrase is "targeted management layers," not "mostly managers."

The facts from the filing and the coverage:

  • Board approval: Oct 1, 2026. Public announcement: Oct 6.
  • Size: nearly 660 roles, about 7% of the workforce.
  • Cost: $65M to $75M in charges, mostly severance, notice periods and transition costs.
  • Timeline: eliminations "substantially complete" by the end of Q1 FY2027, "subject to local law and consultation requirements." Cash payments run through June 30, 2027.
  • Stated rationale: CEO Yamini Rangan's memo called it "not simply a cost-cutting exercise" and said AI efficiencies were not the driver.

The structural change explains who gets hit. Product teams are being regrouped around four customer outcomes:

  1. Generating demand
  2. Winning deals
  3. Serving customers
  4. Supporting growth

The leaders who owned a Hub are the most exposed, because the thing they owned no longer exists as an organizational unit. That product org sits under Duncan Lennox, Chief Product & Technology Officer.

The handling of the cut has also drawn attention. On Oct 13, co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah apologized after a short LinkedIn post wishing departing staff "best wishes with the next chapter" drew criticism.

Who is in the pool: the Senior EM and Director tier

If you plan to hire laid-off engineering managers from HubSpot, you're really looking at Senior Engineering Managers and Directors. In Refolk's index, that tier makes up roughly nine in ten of HubSpot's visible engineering leaders, and plain "Engineering Manager" titles are rare.

Here is what Refolk's index of professional profiles shows for engineering-leadership titles (EM, Senior EM, Director of Engineering):

SegmentCountSeniority mix
US, headline mentions HubSpot39Of 25 sampled: 13 Sr EM, 10 Director, 1 EM

HubSpot-tagged share of Ireland pool~0.6% (8 of 1,326)Derived
92%
Share of sampled US HubSpot-tagged engineering leaders who are Senior EM or Director
In Refolk's index, 23 of 25 sampled profiles hold one of those two titles; the Irish figure is 88%.

A caveat before you build a target list from this. These counts only match profiles that put "HubSpot" in the headline, so they undercount the real headcount. They're also not counts of people who were laid off. Use them for proportions and seniority mix, not totals.

Geographically, Greater Boston and Cambridge is the largest US cluster, with smaller pockets in San Francisco and Seattle. That matters for comp benchmarking and for which local employers will compete with you.

The seniority skew changes the pitch. A Senior EM or Director who ran a Hub-aligned org picks the next role on scope, reporting line and mandate. How fast you can make an offer matters much less.

Why does 20 weeks of severance kill the 5-day blitz?

The minimum package pays 20 weeks of base salary, and long-tenured staff can get up to 30. A displaced HubSpot leader can stay on pay until somewhere between late February and early May 2027, so nobody has to decide anything in October.

The full package, per CMSWire's reporting:

  • Base pay: 20 weeks, plus 1 week per year of service, capped at 30 weeks.
  • Health: five months of COBRA in the US, or Modern Health globally.
  • Outplacement: six months.
  • Equipment: employees keep their laptops and home-office gear.

Counted from the Oct 6 announcement, the clock looks roughly like this:

PackageSeverancePaid through (approx.)
Minimum20 weeksFeb 23, 2027
Cap30 weeksMay 4, 2027

The 5-day blitz assumes the candidate has little runway and is anxious to land something. HubSpot's US staff did get notice fast (affected employees received an email within 15 minutes), but getting notice fast doesn't make someone urgent. A long-tenured Senior EM is paid into Q2, has health cover for five months and has outplacement support for six.

So week-one outreach reaches people at their least receptive. A pitch that lands then gets filed under "later," and by the time "later" comes, it's buried under newer messages.

A HubSpot Director paid through May does not need your role in October. They need you to still be there in February.

Why do the HubSpot layoffs in Dublin run on a different clock?

Irish collective redundancy law requires consultation to start 30 days before the first notice. No dismissal can take effect until 30 days after the minister is notified. Dublin exits can't move with the US wave, so treat Dublin as a second wave running from December into Q1 2027.

Dublin is HubSpot's EMEA headquarters. The Irish rules apply to employers with 300+ staff making 30+ redundancies within 30 days, and breaking them is a criminal offence, with fines up to €250,000. The company's own 8-K says the timing depends on "local law and consultation requirements." TikTok's roughly 300 proposed Dublin cuts this summer went through the same consultation process.

What about other EU offices? No reporting so far confirms HubSpot cuts at specific sites outside Dublin. Use Dublin as the template for any EU location: consultation first, dismissals later, dates subject to change.

The Dublin numbers favor whoever moves early but patiently:

  • The visible pool is tiny. About 8 HubSpot-tagged engineering leaders in Refolk's index, 7 of them still at HubSpot.
  • The market around them is deep. 1,326 engineering leaders in Ireland, with Stripe, Workhuman, Fenergo, Klaviyo and Databricks among the top employers.
  • Absorption is easy. At about 0.6% of the Irish leadership pool, Dublin's existing employers can take these people in once they're free.

The consultation window is when you build the relationship. These people are still employees, so don't pitch hard. Open a conversation. A recruiter who made a respectful first contact in November is the one they call back in February.

The harder problem is finding them in the first place. Plenty of HubSpot leaders don't put the company in their headline, and LinkedIn's title filters don't know which Senior EM owned a Hub. With Refolk, you describe the person in plain English and get back a ranked shortlist drawn from LinkedIn, GitHub and the open web. It doesn't depend on a matching keyword in the headline.

How should you stage outreach to displaced engineering managers?

When people leave this slowly, sourcing engineering managers after a layoff works best in five passes. Map the pool now. Make light contact with the US wave in October and November. Open Dublin from December. Save the real pitches for the severance checkpoints in late February and early May.

  1. Weeks 1 to 2 (from Oct 6): map, don't pitch. Build the list of Senior EMs, Directors and Hub-aligned product leads in Boston, SF, Seattle and Dublin. Note tenure, since it tells you roughly when each person's severance runs out.
  2. Late October to November: US light touch. One short, specific note per person. Name the scope of the role, say there's no rush, and offer a call whenever they're ready. Skip the "saw the news" opener.
  3. December to Q1 2027: Dublin wave. Start once consultation is under way and notices begin. The same light-touch rules apply, and EMEA leaders get their own pass rather than being folded into the US list.
  4. Around Feb 23, 2027: first decision point. Short-tenure leaders hit the end of the 20-week minimum. This is where the conversation turns concrete, so follow up with specific roles.
  5. March to early May 2027: the long-tenure tail. Leaders capped at 30 weeks finish around May 4. A 5-day blitz misses them completely.

A static list goes stale over five months. Headlines change and people quietly accept roles. If you re-run the same plain-English search in Refolk at each checkpoint, you see who has moved, who has added "open to work" and who has updated their title, and you don't have to rebuild the list from scratch.

How do you pitch a laid-off HubSpot engineering leader?

Pitch scope and ownership. These are people who lost their jobs to an org chart change, not to their performance. HubSpot made the cut while it was growing: Q2 revenue was $911.7M, up 20% year over year, and the company spent $531.9M on buybacks that quarter.

That context matters. Rangan said the reduction was not driven by AI efficiencies. These leaders ran engineering orgs inside a large, growing SaaS company and lost their roles because the company changed its structure. Treat them that way.

What to lead with:

  • Mandate. What they would own, who they would report to and how big the team is.
  • Continuity. Someone who owned a Hub fits naturally in a role that owns a product line end to end, which is the structure HubSpot just dissolved.
  • Growth context. Experience scaling inside a company growing 20% a year is the asset you're buying.

What to avoid:

  • Opening with sympathy and a question about whether they're looking.
  • Pricing them as distressed. With up to 30 weeks of pay and six months of outplacement, they aren't.
  • Any reference to Shah's post or the company's handling of the layoff. Former employees can criticize their old company; you shouldn't.

FAQ

How many people did HubSpot lay off in October 2026?

HubSpot announced on Oct 6, 2026 that it would cut nearly 660 roles, about 7% of its workforce. The board approved the plan on Oct 1, and the company expects $65M to $75M in related charges. It hasn't said how the cuts break down by title, department or country, including how many fall in Massachusetts.

How much severance are laid-off HubSpot employees getting?

The HubSpot severance minimum is 20 weeks of base pay. Employees get 1 extra week per year of service, capped at 30 weeks. The package also includes five months of COBRA in the US (or Modern Health globally), six months of outplacement, and the right to keep laptops and home-office equipment. Counted from Oct 6, that pays people through roughly Feb 23 to May 4, 2027.

When will HubSpot's Dublin employees actually leave?

Later than the US group. Under Irish collective redundancy law, consultation has to start 30 days before the first notice, and no dismissal can take effect until 30 days after the minister is notified. HubSpot's filing says eliminations will be substantially complete by the end of Q1 FY2027, subject to local consultation rules, so plan on Dublin exits from December into early 2027.

Is it okay to contact HubSpot managers before their exit date?

Yes, as long as the first contact is low-pressure. Many affected leaders are still employed during notice or consultation. A short note that names a specific role and says there's no rush builds the relationship. Save the full pitch for when their severance is running out, from late February.
