Magic Leap Just Freed 57% of the US Waveguide Pool in One WARN Filing
Magic Leap's Oct 1, 2026 layoff of 193 Plantation FL engineers hits a US waveguide pool of just 337. Why title search misses them and how to build the shortlist first.
Magic Leap filed a WARN notice for 193 layoffs at its Plantation, Florida headquarters, effective October 1, 2026. That single filing releases more than half of the surfaced US waveguide and diffractive-optics talent pool in one day. If you run AR optics recruiting at Apple, Meta Reality Labs, Vuzix, or any Chinese OEM's US arm, the shortlist has to exist before September ends.
The math nobody in AR hiring wants to see
The Plantation WARN filing represents roughly 57% of the entire US waveguide and diffractive-optics engineering pool hitting the market on a single day. In Refolk's index of professional profiles, there are only 337 US-based specialists with waveguide or diffractive-optics skills. Magic Leap is releasing 193 of them.
That ratio is not a normal layoff dynamic. Cloudflare cutting 1,100 engineers barely dents the general software pool. Magic Leap cutting 193 people cuts into a niche where every remaining specialist is already spoken for at Apple, Meta, Google, Samsung Display America Lab, or Analog Devices.
The WARN scope is broad on purpose. It covers software, hardware, UX and design, product management, manufacturing engineering, quality, technical program management, and senior engineering and executive leadership. Magic Leap announced the pivot on July 9, 2026, when it declared it would stop shipping first-party devices and become a waveguide supplier under a partner-first model. The 193 cuts are the operational consequence of that decision.
Two named senior optics leaders sit inside the scope of that filing:
- Kevin Curtis, SVP of advanced optics
- Scott Carden, SVP of display engineering and manufacturing
Carden is the public face of the pivot and Magic Leap will likely retain him to run the supplier business. Curtis is the higher-probability recruiting target. If you are hiring at Apple's Vision Products Group or at Meta Reality Labs in Redmond, his calendar is the first meeting to book.
Why "Waveguide Engineer" as a title filter finds almost nobody
Boolean searches on "Waveguide Engineer" will surface less than 5% of the real US pool. The specialists who actually know how to design, simulate, and manufacture diffractive waveguides sit under generic or adjacent titles at every large employer.
The top US titles for waveguide-skilled talent in Refolk's index are:

None of these say "waveguide" anywhere. This is the standard sourcing failure mode for any deep-tech niche: the label the market uses to describe the skill is not the label employees put on their profile. Apple's optics people do not write "Waveguide Engineer" because Apple does not want them to. Meta's do not because their comp band is tied to a generic Senior Staff ladder.
The mechanism is simple. Companies compensate against a title ladder, not a skill taxonomy. Skills live in the bullets of the job, not in the header. Any sourcing motion that starts with a title Boolean loses.
This is the exact gap Refolk closes. Read the Apple-versus-Meta line carefully. Meta Reality Labs is materially under-resourced on diffractive optics relative to Apple. Orion demos beautifully in an on-stage keynote. Shipping a consumer product against Apple's roadmap requires manufacturing yield at scale, which requires the exact kind of process engineers Magic Leap is about to release. October 1 is not just a hiring event for Meta. It is a competitive inflection.

The China gap is a mirage
Only 9 China-based specialists with these skills surface on English-language profiles, but that is a language artifact, not a real number. The 9 profiles Refolk surfaces are concentrated in Shenzhen, Beijing, and Hangzhou, with Huawei as the largest single employer. The real Chinese waveguide bench is much larger. It just does not live on LinkedIn in English.
For US recruiters this cuts two ways:
- Chinese OEMs cannot easily poach US-based Magic Leap engineers into China. Relocation math does not work in 2026 for most senior optics ICs with families in Florida.
- Chinese OEMs will absolutely try to sign consulting agreements with the Plantation cohort. Xreal, Rokid, and adjacent Meta-competitor plays have an obvious incentive to buy expertise without buying immigration. This is a legal and IP gray zone. Any offer letter you send in October should have exclusivity language that assumes a competing consulting offer already exists.
If you want to hunt the actual Chinese talent (not the 9 English profiles), you need a sourcing system that can query in Mandarin against Chinese-language sources. Refolk does that.
