Canva's 1,271 Aren't All Layoffs. Pitch Engineers Told to Move to Sydney

If you're treating Canva's 1,271 affected positions as 1,271 job seekers and searching "Canva," you're aiming at the wrong group. That figure covers layoffs, role changes and relocations together, and the strongest candidates in it are engineers Canva wants to keep but has asked to move to Sydney. Most of them don't live there.

What did Canva announce on 4 November 2026?

Canva said 1,271 positions are affected by a mix of redundancies, role changes and moves to centralised hubs, and it has not said how many of those are actual job cuts. Sydney becomes the primary home for more product teams, and most hybrid staff are expected in the office two to three days a week from January 2027.

Melanie Perkins put it plainly in the memo: "For some people, this will mean changes to their roles or being asked to relocate to centralised hubs."

The details that matter for sourcing:

  • Org merge. Product, growth and platform teams fold into one product organisation, with fewer management layers and specialised roles combined into broader ones. Platform and specialist engineers are the most exposed.
  • Policy reversal. Staff were once asked to work from their closest hub twice a quarter, and even that rule was later dropped. Two to three days a week is a big jump from there.
  • Severance. At least six months' salary including statutory entitlements, 12 months of healthcare where Canva already provides it, and optional US$10,000 grants for people starting ventures.
  • Alumni directory. Canva is building an opt-in directory of departing employees, shared with its investors, partners and wider industry network.
  • IPO pressure. Canva is expected to list in the US in 2027, but its estimated value was recently cut by around 20%.

Each of those points shifts who is actually available, and when.

Why are relocation targets a better hire than layoff targets?

Engineers asked to relocate were picked by Canva to stay in its new Sydney product org. Engineers who were cut were not. If one of them turns down the move, you're getting someone Canva's own restructure just vetted, and they have a decision to make before January.

A restructure like this is a selection exercise. Leadership decides which roles survive the merge and who fills them. Being asked to move to Sydney means you made the cut. Being made redundant means you didn't, or that your specialist role got folded into a broader one. The second group still includes plenty of strong engineers, but the first group comes pre-filtered.

A restructure is a performance review you didn't have to run. The people asked to move passed it.

Three more things tilt the odds toward the relocation group:

  1. Severance removes urgency from the cut group. Six months of pay plus a year of healthcare means a laid-off senior engineer can interview slowly. They'll hear from everyone.
  2. Equity is a weaker anchor. With the IPO valuation reportedly down around 20%, unvested Canva stock is a smaller reason to say yes to a move.
  3. They chose remote on purpose. Canva's 2023 policy only counted Sydney staff as hybrid if they lived within 100km of the office. Anyone hired as "remote across ANZ" picked that setup deliberately. A move to Sydney is a lifestyle decision, not a commute tweak.

You also won't be the only buyer. Atlassian is the other big Australian remote-first employer and turned up in the same profile sample. It is the obvious competitor for these people.

How many Canva engineers live outside Sydney?

In Refolk's index of professional profiles, 636 engineering-titled profiles in Australia have "Canva" in their headline. In a 25-profile sample, only 44% were in Sydney metro. Another 44% were in Melbourne, Perth and Queensland, which works out to roughly 280 Australian Canva engineers who now face a relocation decision.

24 of 25 sampled were still at Canva, so this is a current-employee pool, not an alumni list.

That 24-of-25 figure is the part most recruiters skip past. Almost everyone in the pool is still employed. These are not job seekers yet. They're engineers holding a decision that has to be made before January.

The remaining 3 of the 25 Australian profiles just say "Australia" with no city. The Australian sample's titles break down as 13 Senior Software Engineers, 8 Software Engineers, 2 Staff and 2 ML Engineers.

Outside Australia, the 68 profiles across New Zealand, Austria and the UK sampled as Auckland or NZ 13, London 5 and Austria 3 (Vienna 2). Searching Austria for any role mentioning Canva turns up another 85 profiles, 13 of 25 sampled in Vienna, with titles like Senior Research Scientist, Senior ML Engineer, Engineering Director and Group Engineering Lead - Photo.

A caveat before you build a forecast on this. A headline keyword match undercounts Canva's 5,000+ staff, because plenty of engineers don't put their employer in the headline. The regional splits come from 25-profile samples. Treat them as directional: the shape is right even if the exact numbers move.

Where are the remote hubs, and which teams sit in them?

Canva's job ads list a flagship campus in Sydney, a second campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland, plus an ML group in Vienna and engineers in London. Its remote job ads named the team in the title, and those team names are your search keywords.

The hubs

  • Melbourne. The second campus and the largest non-Sydney group in the sample (5 of 25). Canva AI backend roles were listed here as "open to remote across ANZ."
  • Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Co-working only. Three Queensland profiles in the sample.
  • Perth. Co-working only, and easy to overlook, but 3 of 25 sampled engineers live there.
  • Adelaide. Home of the Staff Software Engineer - Experiments Platform (AU remote) listing.
  • Auckland. The biggest group outside Australia, 13 of the 25 sampled NZ/AT/UK profiles.
  • Vienna. A legacy acquisition. The Austrian team began as Kaleido AI, the remove.bg company founded by Benjamin Groessing and David Fankhauser, which Canva bought in 2021 when it had 25 AI experts in Vienna.
  • London. Small, 5 of the 25 sampled NZ/AT/UK profiles.

The team keywords

Canva's remote listings put the team name in the title, so search on these:

  • Canva AI (Java backend, ANZ remote)
  • Experiments Platform / Rollout Insights
  • User Platform
  • Design Systems
  • Visual Suite Platform (Staff ML Engineer, AU remote)
  • Mobile Platform (Rust)

Platform appears in four of those six names, and platform teams are the ones being folded into the new product organisation. Expect relocation requests to cluster there.

How do you search for them without typing "Canva" alone?

Start with location, then add team name, then Canva as current employer, and leave out Sydney metro. Searching "Canva" on its own gives you a list weighted toward Sydney, where nobody has a relocation decision to make.

The workflow:

  1. Filter by city first. Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Auckland, Vienna, London. Leave out Sydney and anywhere within roughly 100km of it.
  2. Add team keywords. Canva AI, Experiments Platform, Design Systems, Visual Suite Platform, Mobile Platform, User Platform. Team names can surface people who leave the company out of their headline.
  3. Confirm they're still at Canva. The pool you want is people who haven't left yet. Alumni are a different campaign.
  4. Split by level. Senior and Staff make up 48 to 60% of the samples. Send them a different message from mid-level engineers.
  5. Check the public work. For Mobile Platform, look for Rust. For Vienna, look for research output and remove.bg-era work. Profiles alone won't tell you who built what.

Stacking all of that in LinkedIn boolean takes a while, and it falls apart as soon as someone lists a suburb instead of the city or leaves Canva out of the headline. Refolk closes that gap: you describe the person in plain English and get a ranked shortlist drawn from LinkedIn, GitHub and the open web, with each person's location and team already pulled out.

Why does the timing favour November and December?

Office expectations start in January 2027, so anyone asked to relocate has to decide before then, while laid-off staff have six months' salary and no reason to hurry. Canva's opt-in alumni directory covers departing employees, so engineers still weighing a move won't be listed in it yet.

Both of those are inferences from the timeline. Canva hasn't published a relocation deadline. But a January start date for two to three days a week in Sydney means a family in Perth or Auckland has to decide over the holidays. Reach them in November and you're helping them decide. Reach them in February and they've already signed a lease or a resignation letter.

The directory matters because of who sees it. It goes to Canva's investors, partners and wider network, so investor-backed portfolio companies get first look at anyone who leaves. An engineer who hasn't left yet isn't in it. Between now and January, direct outreach is the only way to reach that group ahead of the companies with directory access.

If you're filling one hard role, like a Staff ML engineer in Melbourne or a platform lead in Auckland, the numbers aren't kind. The non-Sydney pool is a few hundred people, roughly half of them senior, and Atlassian and every portfolio company will be pitching them in the same window. Running that search on top of your day job, or paying an agency to do it, is usually where hires like this stall.

What should the pitch to a relocating Canva engineer say?

Lead with where they get to work, not pay. These engineers chose remote, and with a 48 to 60% Senior-or-Staff mix they can afford to be picky. A bigger number won't beat staying put in Brisbane.

What works:

  • Name the team. "Saw you're on Experiments Platform" shows you did the research.
  • Be exact about the work arrangement. Fully remote, or hybrid in their own city, written down with the number of office days. Vague "flexible" language reads like Canva's old policy before it got reversed.
  • Acknowledge the decision, not a layoff. Many of these people weren't cut. Opening with "sorry to hear about the layoffs" tells them you didn't read the situation.
  • Talk about scope. The merge folds specialist roles into broader ones. A specialist who liked owning a narrow platform may want a place that still values that.
  • Be realistic about equity. With Canva's IPO valuation reportedly down around 20%, your equity story doesn't need to be huge. It needs to be clear.

What to skip: urgency tactics, bulk sequences that say "Canva" in the subject line, and any message that assumes they want to leave. Assume they're undecided.

FAQ

How many people did Canva actually lay off in 2026?

Canva hasn't said. The 1,271 figure covers redundancies, role changes and relocations to centralised hubs together. Until Canva breaks it down, any campaign that treats all 1,271 as job seekers is aimed at the wrong number. Many of those people still have jobs and are deciding whether to move to Sydney.

When should I contact Canva engineers who've been asked to relocate?

November and December 2026. Hybrid office expectations start in January 2027, so relocation decisions have to be made before then. Laid-off staff have at least six months' salary and can take their time, but engineers deciding on a move are working to a much shorter clock.

Will Canva's alumni directory include engineers who decline relocation?

Not at first. The directory is opt-in and covers departing employees, and it's shared with Canva's investors, partners and wider network. Engineers still deciding haven't left, so they won't show up in it. Searching by location and team keywords reaches them before directory access does.
