Airtable's WARN Says 190. Bending Spoons' Record Says Closer to 600
Airtable's WARN notice counts 190 in San Francisco. How big the Bending Spoons cut is, how to find staff still listed as present, and when to start them.
Bending Spoons announced the Airtable cut on Oct 12 without giving a headcount. Three days later the California WARN notice said 190. If you want to hire laid off Airtable engineers, you have three problems. That number undercounts the cut. Most of the people you want still show "Airtable · Present" on LinkedIn. And the start date you should pitch is Jan 19, 2027, not next Monday.
How many people did Airtable actually lay off?
Nobody has published a total, and 190 is the minimum. If Bending Spoons cut at the roughly 75% rate it used at WeTransfer and Komoot, the Airtable layoffs come to about 600 of the company's roughly 800 pre-acquisition staff.
Alessandro Savarese, Airtable's new product lead, announced the cut without a headcount. He said many affected employees would leave by the end of that week. The deal was agreed on Aug 4, 2026 and closed on Sep 4 at $1.285B. The cut came five weeks after close.
The best guide to the real size is what Bending Spoons has done before:
| Company | Staff before | What Bending Spoons cut |
|---|---|---|
| WeTransfer | ~350 | ~260 |
| Komoot | not disclosed | Three quarters of staff |
| Evernote | not disclosed | 129 in Feb 2023, then all existing employees in Jul 2023 |
| Airtable | ~800 | 190 on WARN; ~600 at the 75% rate (derived) |
Bending Spoons replaces teams with its own people rather than trimming them (more on that below). With the same mechanism at work, there's little reason to expect Airtable to come out much differently from WeTransfer.
Why does the Airtable WARN notice say only 190?
A California WARN notice counts workers attached to a reporting site, and Airtable's covers only San Francisco County. Remote employees and staff based outside California can fall outside it completely.
The filing itself tells you less than people assume:
- Filer: "Formagrid Inc. dba Airtable." Search WARN databases for Formagrid, not Airtable.
- Notice date: Oct 15, 2026, three days after the announcement. On announcement day, a state spokesperson confirmed that no WARN advisory had been filed with the California EDD.
- Count: 190 jobs in San Francisco County, classified "Layoff Permanent."
- Location field: "Not stated."
- Last day: Jan 15, 2027.
From Oct 15 to Jan 15 is 92 days, well past the 60-day minimum. That gap explains the strange timeline: people stopped working in mid-October, but they stay on payroll until the notice period runs out. Strauss Borrelli has opened an investigation into Formagrid over the "potential mass layoff." That's mostly noise for recruiters, but expect some candidates to be careful about what they say until their separation terms are settled.
Where are the laid off Airtable engineers?
In Refolk's index of professional profiles, 121 US profiles have "Airtable" in the headline and an engineering title. In a 25-profile sample, 44% were outside California and 28% were in New York or Brooklyn. No California filing covers that New York group.
Here's how the visible pool breaks down:
| Segment | Total profiles | Still list Airtable as current | California share | NY/Brooklyn share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering, US | 121 | 17/25 sampled (68%) | 14/25 (56%) | 7/25 (28%) |
| Engineering, global | 163 | 9/25 sampled (36%) | n/a | 5/25 (20%) |
| PM + product design, US | 18 | 11/18 (61%) | 9/18 (50%) | 2/18 (11%) |
| WARN filing (SF only) | 190 | n/a | 100% by definition | 0% |
These are headline-keyword matches, so treat them as a lower bound. Most Airtable employees never put the company name in their headline. What the numbers do show reliably is the shape of the pool:
- It's mostly American. 121 of the 163 engineering profiles are in the US (74%).
- It's mostly engineers. Engineers outnumber PMs and product designers about 6.7 to 1.
- It's split between two coasts. If you work only from the WARN list, you miss almost half the engineers.
- It overlaps with earlier cuts. Airtable filed California WARN notices for 111 workers in Dec 2022 and 99 in Sep 2023. That likely accounts for some of the non-current profiles in the sample, now at Google, Meta and Figma. These are former colleagues and useful references, and sometimes they'll introduce you.
If you're hiring in San Francisco, you're competing with every other employer that read the same headlines. That market is crowded.
Why will "open to work" filters miss them until January?
They're still employed through Jan 15, 2027, so most affected staff have no reason to change their current employer yet. In Refolk's sample, 17 of 25 US Airtable engineers still list Airtable as current.
Think about it from the candidate's side. Their paycheck still comes from Airtable. Their separation agreement isn't public, and they may not be sure what it lets them say. Updating LinkedIn tells their whole network they were cut, and it doesn't earn them anything for another three months. So many leave the profile alone. The usual layoff signals (an "Open to Work" frame, an "ex-Airtable" headline, a new end date) mostly won't show up until mid-January. By then, every agency recruiter will be messaging them.
The hard part is telling the cut people apart from the ones who stayed. Not all of the roughly 800 pre-deal staff were let go, so "current employer: Airtable" alone returns both groups. Stack these signals instead:
- Function. Engineering, product and design were replaced by Bending Spoons staff, so those titles are where the cut concentrates.
- Activity break after Oct 16. If someone's GitHub contribution graph shows private contributions, a sudden drop after mid-October is a strong signal. So is a jump in personal-repo commits.
- Soft profile edits. A rewritten "About" section, a new portfolio link, or a post thanking a team, even with the employer field unchanged.
- Location outside SF. New York, Brooklyn and remote profiles are the ones nobody working from the WARN list will find.
Normal Boolean search handles this badly. You can't type "stopped committing in October" into a LinkedIn search bar. That's the gap Refolk fills: you describe the person in plain English, and it checks LinkedIn, GitHub and the open web together, then returns a ranked shortlist.
Why is this cohort stronger than a typical layoff?
The Airtable cut swapped one team for another. It wasn't about performance. Savarese said experienced engineers, product managers and designers from across Bending Spoons had already joined Airtable, so the people leaving were replaced, not judged.
That changes how you screen them. In a normal layoff, a careful hiring manager wonders whether the cuts went after weaker performers. Here the decision was about whose team runs the product, Airtable's or Bending Spoons'. Federico Simionato, a Bending Spoons product leader, said so directly on X: "If you're hiring, these are excellent people and worth a call." The post drew a backlash. One commenter called it "the most unempathetic thing I've read in my life." The tone was bad, but what he said is useful to a recruiter. The new owner is vouching for the people it let go.
Bending Spoons didn't let Airtable's engineers go because they were weak. It let them go because it had its own.
The product side is where the competition will be worst. In Refolk's index, 18 US profiles carry "Airtable" with a PM or product designer title, against 121 engineers, and 11 of those 18 still list Airtable as current. Every company with an open product role will be chasing the same few people. A role that has sat empty for a quarter won't get filled by posting and hoping, and an agency charging a percentage of first-year salary to send you the same 11 names is not a good deal.
When should a laid off Airtable employee start?
Plan on Tuesday, Jan 19, 2027. Jan 15 is a Friday and Monday Jan 18 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Get the offer signed in November with a January start, so the candidate keeps their notice pay and you have them before the January hiring rush.
This timing is the real advantage in the Airtable layoffs, and most hiring teams will get it wrong. Some will push for a December start and run into candidates who don't want to give up weeks of pay. Others will wait until January and find out the best people signed somewhere else over the holidays. Here's the sequence that works:
- Find them in October and November, while profiles still say "present" and inboxes are quiet.
- Ask about timing neutrally. Something like "What start date works with your current arrangement?" is enough. The separation terms aren't public, and some agreements may stop paying people who start a new job early. Don't assume either way.
- If their pay is protected, offer a Jan 19 start and say plainly that they lose nothing by signing now.
- If an earlier start is allowed and they want it, consider a signing bonus that covers the notice pay they'd lose. Don't treat it as an automatic discount.
- Close in November. Once Jan 15 passes, profiles flip to "ex-Airtable" all at once and everyone is competing for the same people.
What to put in the first message
- Name the work, not the layoff. Mention the specific part of Airtable they built if their profile or GitHub shows it.
- Don't quote Simionato. His post angered the people it was about. You can use his point without his words.
- Lead with the start date. "Sign now, start Jan 19" tells them you understand their situation.
- Don't ask why they were let go. The answer is "Bending Spoons brought its own team," and both of you already know it.
FAQ
How many people did Airtable lay off?
Airtable and Bending Spoons haven't published a total. The California WARN notice lists 190 permanent layoffs in San Francisco County. That leaves out remote and non-California staff. Bending Spoons cut about three quarters of the staff at WeTransfer and Komoot. Applied to Airtable's roughly 800 pre-acquisition employees, that rate implies about 600 people, so 190 should be treated as the minimum.
Why do the Airtable layoffs end on January 15?
January 15, 2027 is the last day listed on the WARN notice filed Oct 15, 2026, 92 days later. Affected employees stopped working in mid-October but stay on payroll through the notice period. That's why many still list Airtable as their current employer on LinkedIn.
Can laid off Airtable employees start a new job before January 15?
Maybe, but check before you push for it. The separation agreements aren't public, and starting a new job early could affect notice pay. The safest offer is a November signature with a start on Tuesday, Jan 19, 2027, the first working day after the notice period ends and the MLK holiday.
How do I find the Airtable WARN notice?
Search California WARN databases for "Formagrid Inc. dba Airtable," the legal entity that filed it, rather than "Airtable." The filing is dated Oct 15, 2026, covers 190 jobs in San Francisco County, is classified "Layoff Permanent," and lists the location as "Not stated."
