Xbox Reportedly Has 1,332 Cuts Left. Recruit Its Engineers Before November
Xbox reportedly has 1,332 cuts left across three waves. How to pitch The Coalition's engine engineers before November, while their bonuses are in doubt.
If you want to hire Xbox's engine engineers, the layoff headline is the worst time to reach out. By then every other recruiter is in the same inbox, and the people you want are sitting on a paid notice period with no reason to rush.
Fortune reported, citing anonymous sources, that Asha Sharma is lining up three more layoff rounds at Xbox: one in October, one in November and one in January. About 1,332 roles remain in the 3,200-role reset, and the most exposed engineers are still employed and worried about being cut before their bonuses are due. If you plan to hire laid off game developers from Xbox, call them before the layoff, not after.
What is left of the Xbox layoffs 2026 plan?
Roughly 1,332 roles are still to go, out of a 3,200-role target, spread over three reported waves. About 1,600 positions were cut on July 6 and 268 more on September 22, which comes to 1,868 so far.
One caveat before you build a plan on these numbers. The Fortune report rests on anonymous sources, and those sources said the schedule could still change. The Verge and Notebookcheck repeat that one report, so their coverage doesn't count as independent confirmation. Microsoft hasn't confirmed dates, teams, locations or headcounts for any of the waves.
| Metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox cuts completed | 1,868 (58.4% of 3,200) | Fortune, derived |
| Cuts remaining | 1,332 (41.6%) | Derived |
| Average per wave, if equal | ~444 | Derived, assumes equal waves |
| Redmond WARN still pending | 277, effective Nov 21 | WARN filing |
| Engine/gameplay/graphics-titled engineers, US + Canada | 872 | Refolk's index |
| Unreal/C++-tagged profiles, US vs Canada | 886,641 vs 129,049 | Refolk's index |
The deadline is also unsettled. Sharma's memo spreads the cuts across fiscal 2027, and Microsoft's fiscal year runs through June 2027. GamesRadar says Xbox has to reach 3,200 by the end of March. I'd plan around June 2027 and treat March as the aggressive case.
Why pitch before the layoff instead of after?
Pitch before the layoff because notified Xbox staff stay on payroll for weeks, and reported severance gives them a reason to sit tight. If your offer only shows up after the layoff news, you're competing with a paid notice period.
A WARN notice is a legally required advance filing that announces mass layoffs to the state. Washington requires 60 days, which is why a filing dated July 6 produced terminations on September 4. A filing dated September 22 covers 277 Redmond workers and takes effect November 21, 2026. All 277 are employed today, already know their status, and are deciding what comes next.
Severance makes it harder to pull them out early. Microsoft publishes no formula. Employee-reported figures, which I'd treat as low confidence, mention up to about 39 weeks of base pay, and one tracker says RSU vesting continues during the severance period. Here's what that means for you:
- A Redmond engineer with a November 21 end date has every financial reason to see the notice period out.
- Someone who expects to be cut in November or January has a reason to wait for the package instead of resigning.
- A "we're hiring" post loses to that math. An offer with a start date after the severance date doesn't, because it adds to the package instead of replacing it.
Most recruiters get the sequence backwards. They wait for the headline, then flood inboxes in the same week as every other company. The quiet weeks before a wave are when these engineers are worried but not yet buried in pitches.
The Coalition layoffs: why a shipped game isn't a shield
The Coalition shipped Gears of War: E-Day on October 6, 2026, and its staff still expect cuts right after launch, before bonuses are due. Shipping a big game no longer means a team is safe at Xbox.
The warning signs are public:
- E-Day story director Juan Vaca was laid off two weeks before the game's release.
- Staff had thought of themselves as Xbox's "good children" because they had a major release coming. That belief didn't hold up.
- One Coalition source said: "Now we're just expecting the next wave, or being reorganized under Activision or something later this year."
The timing makes sense from the other side of the table. Post-launch is when a studio needs the fewest people, and the bonus that would normally keep a team together through that stretch is an obvious place to save money. A finance team trying to hit 1,332 can see that as clearly as you can.
The studio-level picture points the same way. Halo Studios was at the centre of the September wave. Xbox is separating from Compulsion Games, Undead Labs and Double Fine, and Ninja Theory is at risk of closing after a deal fell through. Don't take any team off your list because it just shipped something good.
What to offer someone who doesn't have severance yet
Offer what severance can't give them: certainty about the bonus, a start date, and a stable employer. A still-employed Xbox engineer is weighing a known package against an unknown future, so your offer needs to remove the unknowns.
- A bonus buyout. Match or partly match the launch or Metacritic bonus they expect to lose. For Coalition staff, this goes straight at the thing they're most worried about.
- A guaranteed start date after the notice period. Write it in. A start the week after November 21 lets a Redmond engineer collect the whole notice period and still take your offer.
- Flexibility on the severance window. If reported RSU vesting continues through severance, a start date set after that window costs you a few weeks and removes their main reason to say no.
- Stability in writing. Explain your funding, your roadmap and how many reorgs your team has had. Someone who has lived through two Xbox waves already cares about this more than a title bump.
- A fast decision. Two interview loops and an offer inside two weeks. The waves are dated, and your process should keep up with them.
Your offer should sit on top of their severance. If it asks them to give it up, they'll wait.
How to recruit Unreal Engine C++ engineers when their titles hide them
Search by the work people do, not their job titles, because most Xbox engine talent doesn't carry an engine title. In Refolk's index, only 872 profiles in the US and Canada have explicit gameplay, engine or graphics programmer titles, or "Unreal Engineer/Developer" titles.
The 1,332 remaining cuts are 1.5x that entire title-matched pool across two countries. Not every cut will be an engineer. Still, the engine talent coming out of Xbox is large next to the visible market, and title searches will miss most of it, because plenty of Xbox engine engineers are just "Software Engineer."
A loose skill search goes too far the other way. Refolk's index has 886,641 US profiles and 129,049 Canadian profiles tagged with Unreal Engine or C++. Founders and CTOs dominate the top titles in that pool, so it shows which way the market leans and not much more. The people you want are somewhere between 872 and 886,641, and neither Boolean string will find them.
The title-matched sample shows what good looks like. Its employers include Bethesda Game Studios and ZeniMax Online Studios (both Microsoft), Naughty Dog, Epic Games, Cloud Chamber, Squanch Games and Meta.
The signals that separate engine engineers from people who once wrote some C++:
- Shipped titles listed in the profile or a portfolio, especially Gears or Halo credits
- Rendering, networking, physics or tools work described in role summaries
- GitHub activity in Unreal plugins, shader code or engine forks
- Conference talks or blog posts on engine topics
- Tenure at a named Xbox studio alongside a generic engineering title
This is the gap Refolk is built for. You describe the person in plain English, for example a rendering engineer at The Coalition with shipped Unreal credits, and get back a ranked shortlist across LinkedIn, GitHub and the open web, including people whose title just says "Software Engineer."
Vancouver isn't Redmond
A Coalition cut puts supply into a much thinner market than a Redmond cut does, and that favors remote US companies and Canadian employers outside gaming. Refolk's index counts 129,049 Unreal or C++-tagged profiles in Canada against 886,641 in the US, a 6.9x gap.
Canada is about 12.7% of the combined pool. The Canadian slice of the engine-titled sample also leans toward Montreal and Toronto, not Vancouver. So when The Coalition lets people go, they come out into a city with fewer local studios competing for them. That cuts several ways:
- For Vancouver studios: less local competition for laid-off talent. Move quickly and you could be one of the few local offers they get.
- For US companies hiring remotely: a thin local market means a strong remote offer has less to compete against.
- For Canadian non-gaming employers: engineers who don't want to leave the country are a real opening for simulation, visualisation and robotics teams willing to offer remote work or relocation.
Redmond is a different market. The 277 people in the November 21 WARN notice sit in a much deeper US pool, so expect more competition for them and plan a sharper, earlier pitch.
Where game engine engineers fit outside gaming
Unreal Engine 5 and C++ skills now carry over into robotics simulation, defense and VR training, automotive and architectural visualisation, and film-style virtual production. These employers can offer the one thing Xbox can't right now, which is stability.
Two named employers hiring for these skills:
- AION Robotics, hiring an Unreal Engine developer for robotics simulation at $40 to $75 an hour
- Virtuix, building VR training and simulation products
Beyond those, automotive configurators and virtual production both depend on real-time engine work.
The skills map closely. A gameplay engineer understands physics, animation state and latency, and a robotics simulator needs the same things. What changes between the two jobs is the stakes, and for many people who've watched two Xbox waves go by, lower stakes will sound good.
Pitch it honestly. Many game developers chose the industry for the craft and won't leave easily. Lead with the technical problem, not the exit. "I need someone who can make a robot arm's physics simulation hold up in real time" works much better than "Want out of gaming?"
A dated playbook for October through January
Work the reported waves as a calendar, not as a single event. Each date gives you a different group of people at a different stage.
- Now, around the October wave. Map The Coalition, Halo Studios and the Redmond teams. Build the shortlist before anything is announced. Refolk is useful here because a plain-English query by studio and skill turns up people a title filter won't.
- Before November 21. Contact the 277 Redmond WARN-notice employees. They know their status and have time to interview. Offer start dates after November 21.
- The November wave. This is the riskiest window for post-launch Coalition staff, who fear cuts before bonuses are due. Lead with the bonus buyout.
- The January wave. Contact the people who held on in October and November. They'll have watched two more rounds go by and will be the most open to a stable offer.
- Through June 2027. If the fiscal-year deadline holds, keep a light-touch list going until the reset is done.
Keep the messages short and specific. Name the studio, the game, and the problem you need solved. These engineers will get plenty of generic recruiter pings this winter, and the ones that mention their actual work are the ones that get answered.
FAQ
Has Microsoft confirmed the October, November and January Xbox layoffs?
No. The three-wave schedule comes from a single Fortune report based on anonymous sources, who said the timing could change. Microsoft hasn't confirmed dates, headcounts, teams or locations. The only firm date is the WARN filing covering 277 Redmond workers, effective November 21, 2026.
How much severance do laid-off Microsoft employees get?
Microsoft doesn't publish a severance formula. Employee-reported and leaked figures mention up to about 39 weeks of base pay, and one tracker reports that RSU vesting continues during the severance period. Treat both as low confidence, but assume the people you're pitching expect a meaningful package and will weigh your offer against it.
Which Xbox studios have been affected so far?
The Coalition lost E-Day story director Juan Vaca two weeks before launch, and Halo Studios was at the centre of the September wave. Xbox is separating from Compulsion Games, Undead Labs and Double Fine, and Ninja Theory is at risk of closing after a deal fell through.
Where can game engine engineers work outside gaming?
Robotics simulation, defense and VR training, automotive and architectural visualisation, and virtual production all hire Unreal Engine 5 and C++ engineers. AION Robotics, which is hiring a UE developer for robotics simulation at $40 to $75 an hour, and Virtuix are two named examples.
