Oracle cut 30,000 with a headline. Google cut somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000 engineers across four different mechanisms in 2026, produced zero headline numbers, and as a result the entire pool is invisible to the boolean searches every recruiter is running this week.

TechCrunch's July 2026 running list and KORE1's staffing analysis both peg the total in that 1,500 to 3,000+ range. Roughly 120,000 tech roles have been cut in 2026 per Layoffs.fyi, and Google's fragmented cuts are missing from most trackers. HN's "Who is Hiring? (August 2026)" thread is on the front page with hundreds of open engineering roles. The demand is there. The pool is there. The bridge between them, if you rely on LinkedIn keyword sourcing, is broken.

Why "ex-Google" boolean returns almost nothing

Because the 2026 cuts were fragmented across four mechanisms that each carry different exit narratives, and departed engineers deliberately avoid the "laid off" label when the exit was PIP-coded or buyout-coded. In Refolk's index of professional profiles, only 7 US-based profiles match "ex-Google" or "former Google" across Software Engineer, Staff, Senior, and Engineering Manager titles. Against a low-end estimate of 1,500 displaced engineers, that is a 0.47% recall rate.

The four mechanisms, per KORE1 and TechCrunch:

  1. January performance-based separations across teams. No cohort, no date, no announcement.
  2. Voluntary buyouts in Platforms & Devices (Android, Chrome, Pixel, Fitbit, Nest), a unit with more than 25,000 employees.
  3. March involuntary cuts in the combined Platforms & Devices group, tied to restructuring. Reuters reported "hundreds."
  4. Manager delayering: 35% fewer managers with small teams over the past year.

None of these produced a WARN filing cohort. None produced an announcement date a sourcer can anchor to. And the affected engineers, especially the January PIP-coded ones, actively rewrite their headlines to the new employer or to "Stealth" the moment they leave. "Stealth" literally appears as a top current employer in Refolk's ex-Google Android query results.

The addressable pool is best measured by skill and last-employer signals, not by keyword. Once you switch axes, the pool goes from 7 to hundreds.

The 728 senior US Android engineers is the shape of the addressable Platforms & Devices alumni pool. The 15,261 Go + Kubernetes number is the infra pool that ex-Google Cloud engineers land inside. Filtering on tenure gap plus last-title-at-Google inside those pools is a fundamentally different sourcing motion than typing "ex-Google" into LinkedIn.

This is the exact gap Refolk closes: you describe the person in plain English ("Senior Android engineer, previously at Google in the last 18 months, now at a non-FAANG company, US-based outside SF") and get a ranked shortlist that ignores whether the target ever typed the word "laid" into their profile.

The Platforms & Devices cohort is not in the Bay Area

The March Platforms & Devices cohort is geographically dispersed, and remote-friendly employers who source only in SF and NYC are missing it. KORE1's analysis notes the March cohort "is still largely available in markets outside the Bay Area."

The mechanism is org history. Platforms & Devices has heavy footprints in:

  • Kirkland, WA (Chrome, Android)
  • Boulder, CO (Chrome, Fitbit engineering)
  • Austin, TX (Pixel hardware, Android)

If your ATS geo-filter is "San Francisco Bay Area, 25 miles," you are running a search that structurally excludes the most available third of the pool. Comp expectations for this group sit at $165K to $220K base for senior platform engineers per KORE1, which is competitive but not Bay Area 2022 competitive, meaning offers close.

The landing pattern is already visible

Refolk's index shows the top current employers of US senior Android engineers with Android + Kotlin are Meta, Robinhood, Airbnb, Peloton, and Reddit. None of them Google. Some of those companies are themselves running quiet reductions, which means a second-hop sourcing motion (ex-Google to Peloton in 2024, now available in 2026) is a real pattern, not a hypothetical.

The 35% manager delayering created a specific glut

Google cut more than a third of the managers overseeing small teams over the past year, which produced a specific glut of ex-Google EMs of 3-to-5-person teams who now need IC roles or larger scope. Most sourcers do not filter for this transition, so these managers sit unclaimed.

The mechanism is a size mismatch. A Google EM who ran a 4-person team at L6 has:

  • More scope than a typical Series B tech lead role, so they screen out on "too senior."
  • Less scope than a typical Series C director role, so they screen out on "not enough reports."
  • IC coding skills that decayed 12 to 24 months ago, so they screen out on "not hands-on."

The correct filter for this group is not title. It is title trajectory. Someone whose LinkedIn shows "Engineering Manager, Google, 2021 to 2026" followed by a 2-to-4-month gap is a very different candidate than someone whose profile shows a continuous promotion pattern. That trajectory filter is not something LinkedIn Recruiter surfaces natively, but it is exactly the kind of plain-English constraint that works well when you can just ask for it: "ex-Google engineering managers who ran teams of 5 or fewer, now looking for staff IC or director roles."

The pool went from 7 to 728 the moment I stopped searching for the word "laid" and started searching for the actual work.

DeepMind is a false signal. Cloud security is a hidden one.

"Ex-Google AI" pulls the wrong pool. DeepMind's core research workforce has been largely protected in 2026, so filtering for "ex-Google AI" surfaces voluntary DeepMind attritors (expensive, choosy, often headed to Anthropic or a founder path) rather than the displaced engineers who are actually available.

The real hidden sub-pool sits inside Google Cloud. Google quietly cut employees across Cloud, including its Threat Intelligence Group and Mandiant-linked cybersecurity staff, even as Cloud revenue grew 63% to more than $20 billion. That combination (record revenue plus involuntary cuts) produces a specific candidate: highly employable, confused about why they were cut, and receptive to a fast close.

Two named sub-orgs to search directly:

  • Mandiant (acquired by Google in 2022, integrated into Google Cloud Security)
  • Google Threat Intelligence Group (the internal umbrella covering Mandiant plus VirusTotal plus TAG)

The 15,261 US Staff/Senior/Principal engineers with Go and Kubernetes in Refolk's index is the pool these Cloud engineers land inside. Filtering that pool by "previous employer contains Google or Mandiant, exit within the last 12 months" is a two-clause search that returns a workable shortlist. Doing the same thing in LinkedIn Recruiter requires seven or eight nested boolean groups and still misses anyone who scrubbed the word "Mandiant" from their profile after the acquisition.

The GlobalLogic contractors nobody counts

There is a further pool that never appears in any Google alumni search at all: 200 contract workers laid off from GlobalLogic, the outsourcing firm that ran Gemini training and response review. These workers built and evaluated the model that half your candidates are asking about in interviews, and their profiles list GlobalLogic, not Google. They are functionally ex-Google-adjacent AI evaluation engineers, and every keyword search will miss them.

What to actually do this week

Reach the displaced pool by switching from keyword sourcing to signal sourcing, and by pairing three or four signals rather than relying on any single one.

The signal stack that works:

  1. Tenure gap: last Google role ended in the last 18 months, followed by a 1-to-6-month gap or a "Stealth" entry.
  2. Last title at Google: Senior SWE, Staff SWE, Engineering Manager, plus team keyword (Android, Chrome, Pixel, Mandiant, Cloud TIG).
  3. Geography that is not SF: Kirkland, Boulder, Austin, or remote.
  4. Landing company pattern: currently at Meta, Robinhood, Airbnb, Reddit, Peloton, Cloudflare, Datadog, or Crusoe (all appear as top landing destinations in the index).
  5. Skill fingerprint: Android + Kotlin, or Go + Kubernetes, or C++ + gRPC for infra roles.

At least two of those signals (tenure gap, "Stealth" as an employer) are not first-class filters in LinkedIn Recruiter. That is where sourcing effort belongs.

What comp should we offer to close ex-Google Platforms & Devices engineers?
