FDE Hiring 2026: Why "Forward Deployed Engineer" Search Misses 7 of 8

FDE postings jumped 800% in 2025. Title search now misses most qualified engineers. Here is how to source Forward Deployed Engineers on signal, not strings.

FDE Hiring 2026: Why "Forward Deployed Engineer" Search Misses 7 of 8

Gergely Orosz's May 15, 2026 Pragmatic Engineer column, "Forward deployed engineering heats up again," landed in the same week Sundar Pichai and Aaron Levie both named the FDE the hardest hire of 2026. If you are running an FDE search this quarter and your LinkedIn Recruiter project is keyed on the string "Forward Deployed Engineer," you are looking at maybe one in eight of the actual candidate pool. The title fragmented across seven companies before the demand spike, and the demand spike just made the fragmentation worse.

This is a sourcing problem, not a market problem. The people exist. They are just filed under the wrong word.

The 800% spike that broke title search

Indeed and the Financial Times clocked FDE postings rising more than 800% between January and September 2025. Salesforce committed to building a team of 1,000 FDEs. BCG renamed every staff member inside BCGX to either "Forward Deployed Engineer" or "Forward Deployed AI Scientist" in April 2026. EY launched a UK and Ireland FDE practice the same month with an initial cohort of 50 senior AI engineers. Adobe is hiring "Forward Deployed AI Engineers" against its Firefly stack. Accenture and Microsoft announced a joint FDE practice in March pledging "thousands of AI-skilled engineers" working in "FDE crews." Cognizant set itself the objective of deploying 1,000 Context Engineers. PwC formalized an AI-Native Engineering career path in January. Capgemini ships "Outcome Deployed Engineers." IBM calls its analogue Client Engineering.

Indeed and Financial Times data. Salesforce alone committed to 1,000 hires.

Every one of those companies is hiring against the same archetype. None of them prints the same string on the badge.

That is the structural reason string-match search fails. But there is a second, sneakier reason: timing.

The Colin Jarvis problem

Colin Jarvis is the Head of Forward Deployed Engineering at OpenAI. He joined OpenAI in 2022 as a Solutions Architect. He became Head of Solutions Architecture last year. At the start of 2026, he presented the business case to spin up a Forward Deployed Engineering org. That is the canonical FDE leader at the canonical FDE-era company, and his LinkedIn title was "Solutions Architect" for roughly three of the last four years.

Most current FDEs are like Jarvis. They were hired 12 to 24 months ago under "Solutions Architect," "Solutions Engineer," "Customer Engineer," "Sales Engineer," or "Applied AI Engineer." They have not updated their profile. They will not update their profile until they are looking, and the senior ones are not looking, because their comp curve is steep and their renewal book is sticky.

When you filter on current title, you do not get operators. You get badge-changers: people who updated their title last week because their employer rebranded the function, or because the title is hot. That is the BCG cohort. Useful, sometimes. Not who you want at the top of the funnel.

The seven titles your boolean is missing

Pull these out and put them in a sticky note next to your monitor. In the wild, the FDE archetype currently lives under at least these seven variants:

  1. Forward Deployed Engineer (Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic, Ramp, Rippling, BCG)
  2. Forward Deployed AI Engineer / Forward Deployed AI Scientist (Adobe, BCG X)
  3. Solutions Engineer / Solutions Architect (OpenAI pre-2026, Salesforce, most cloud vendors)
  4. Deployment Strategist (Salesforce pods, OpenAI)
  5. Delta (Palantir's internal name, dates to the early 2010s when the role was created)
  6. Applied AI Engineer / Customer Engineer (Google Cloud, Anthropic, smaller labs)
  7. Outcome Deployed Engineer / Context Engineer / Client Engineering (Capgemini, Cognizant, IBM)

A cross-check of these seven variants across the US and UK returns roughly 10,900 matching profiles in our index. The single largest concentration is Palantir, and the most common current title is "Solutions Engineer," not "Forward Deployed Engineer." Most of the actual population is hiding under legacy titles. If your shortlist this week came from a LinkedIn keyword filter, you can do the math on what you missed.

note: Palantir is the largest single concentration. The top current title is Solutions Engineer.
