Barclays Cuts 5,000. Its Developers Are AVPs in Pune, Not London

Barclays layoffs 2026 hit software developers, but most list a bank grade, not a job title, and sit in Pune. How to find and hire ex-Barclays engineers.

Barclays Cuts 5,000. Its Developers Are AVPs in Pune, Not London

If you're hiring fintech engineers, you have until roughly December to reach the Barclays developers being cut, and a "software engineer at Barclays" search will miss most of them. Their profiles say "Assistant Vice President," and most of them are in Pune, not London.

On October 22, 2026, alongside its Q3 results, Barclays said it would cut about 5,000 jobs and named software developers among the support functions affected.

What did Barclays actually announce?

Barclays plans to cut about 5,000 roles, roughly 5% of its 93,000 staff, with the remainder due by the end of 2026 and subject to consultation. It reported £2.3bn in Q3 pre-tax profit and is targeting more than £1.1bn in savings by 2027, so this is a profitable bank restructuring, not one in distress.

The key facts:

  • Size: about 5,000 roles, about 5% of headcount
  • Already gone: about 1,000
  • Remaining: about 4,000, due by end of 2026, subject to consultation
  • Support-function share: about 60% of the second half (around 2,400 roles), which explicitly includes software developers
  • Savings target: more than £1.1bn by 2027

Check the support-role figure before you repeat it. A "~3,000" number comes from applying 60% to the full 5,000. HCA's reporting says the 60% applies to the second-half cuts, which comes to about 2,400 of the remaining ~4,000. That's still a large pool, just not the one a 3,000 figure implies.

CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan called AI "the icing on the cake, not the cake." He credits years of infrastructure and simplification work for the gains. Taken at face value, that means the bank is cutting the teams whose modernization work is finished, as well as the ones AI makes cheaper.

Why does a "software engineer at Barclays" search miss most of them?

Barclays engineers use their corporate grade as their public job title, so a search on job function skips them. In a 25-profile sample of Barclays-linked Java engineers with AVP or VP titles, none of the top titles contained the word "engineer."

Here are the titles that sample used:

  • "Assistant Vice President" (14)
  • "Vice President" (6)
  • "AVP" (3)
  • "VP" (1)
  • "Avp" (1)

A corporate grade is a bank-wide pay and seniority band that applies to every function, from risk to HR to engineering. Banks use it in place of a job-function title. An engineer at Barclays is often a "VP," and so is someone in compliance two floors up. Barclays' own job ads do the same thing: "API Software Engineer - AVP" and "Platforms-API Software Engineer - BA4" are real posting titles.

This matters for Boolean search. If the profile headline says "Assistant Vice President at Barclays" and the skills section lists Java and KDB, a query built on "software engineer" or "developer" returns nothing. You have to combine grade, employer and stack:

  1. Grade: "Assistant Vice President" OR "AVP" OR "Vice President" OR "VP" OR "BA4"
  2. Employer: Barclays (current or past)
  3. Stack: Java, KDB, PySpark, or whatever your req actually needs

Even that query is noisy. Headline matching also picks up alumni and people who mention Barclays in passing. Current employers in the samples included Wise, Amazon, JPMorganChase and Wells Fargo. Some of those are people who already left, which is useful in its own way, but filter on current employer before you assume someone is affected.

That hand-built OR string is the friction Refolk removes. You describe the person in plain English ("Java engineers currently at Barclays with an AVP or VP title, in Pune or the UK"), and I resolve grade titles, employer history and stack together, so you don't have to maintain a query for every grade variant.

Where are Barclays' engineers actually located?

Most of them are in India, mainly Pune. In Refolk's index, profiles mentioning Barclays with Java skills outnumber the UK pool 3.3 to 1, and 68% of the AVP/VP sample is located in Pune.

UK press has covered the cuts as a British job-loss story. For a recruiter, the Indian pool is bigger, and for most fintechs it's the cheaper hire. Barclays' careers site says the Pune campus (Kharadi) holds about 9,000 Operations, Technology and Functions staff, and Chennai more than 5,000. That page is several years old, so treat those numbers as orders of magnitude.

The 20% figure is approximate because US profiles appear in the 689 but not in the denominator. Read it as "roughly one in five Barclays Java engineers shows a mid-to-senior grade title," not as a precise ratio.

The UK pool isn't only London

If you're sourcing fintech engineers in the UK, look beyond London. Barclays runs three technology Command Centres, and none of them is in London:

  • Pune, India
  • Radbroke, Knutsford
  • Whippany, New Jersey

Glasgow and Edinburgh also showed up in the UK sample. A UK search limited to London misses Knutsford and Scotland entirely.

How do Barclays grades map to standard tech levels?

As a rule of thumb, BA4 is a senior engineer, AVP is roughly SDE2 to senior, and VP is a staff engineer or tech lead. A Barclays VP is usually not an executive, and treating the title as one will distort both your screening and your offer.

Practitioners report the ladder as BA1, BA2, BA3, BA4, AVP, VP, Director, MD. On forums, engineers say "AVP" maps to SDE2, and a VP who codes is "essentially doing a job of technical lead." Levels.fyi also lists a BA5 band that isn't on that ladder, and one US salary record reads "AVP (BA4)." The grade-to-title mapping isn't consistent, so confirm it per candidate.

Barclays gradeRough tech equivalentLevels.fyi median total pay (blended)
BA4Senior engineer / SDE2$59.6K
BA5Not on the practitioner ladder$107K
AVPSDE2 to seniorNo figure in this data
VPStaff engineer / tech lead$171K

Those medians blend pay across countries, so a Pune BA4 and a Whippany VP fall in very different bands. Use the table to set your level, then price the person by location.

The VP title trap

When a fintech sees "VP" on a resume, it makes one of two mistakes:

  1. Screening out as too senior. The hiring manager assumes the person runs a department and won't want an IC role. Engineers describe VP as the tech-lead grade, so many of these candidates are still hands-on.
  2. Over-offering. The recruiter anchors on executive pay and builds a package to match. The candidate's real benchmark is closer to a $171K blended median, and that figure averages in lower-paid locations.
A Barclays VP who writes Java is a tech lead with a business card problem. Level them on scope, not title.

The fix is one screening question: "How many engineers did you set technical direction for, and how much of your week was code?" That answer will level the person more accurately than their grade will.

Why should you ask Barclays candidates about Claude Code?

Barclays is rolling out Claude Code across its developer base at the same time it cuts support roles. Engineers who have used AI coding tools to modernize legacy systems inside a regulated bank are an unusual profile, and some of them may be in the cut.

On October 1, three weeks before the cuts, Barclays expanded its partnership with Anthropic. It set a target of 50% of its developers on Claude Code by the end of 2026 and a majority by 2027. Group Co-COO Craig Bright is the executive named on the rollout.

TechTimes reports that Barclays' own "3A Framework" research, published in September, flagged computer and engineering roles as among the most exposed to AI. That comes from a single secondary source, so don't build a pitch on it. The timing is still worth noticing.

Why this is a hiring signal and not just a news detail:

  • Regulated-environment AI experience is scarce. Using an AI coding tool is common. Shipping AI-assisted changes inside a bank's controls is not.
  • Being cut doesn't mean being weak. If Venkatakrishnan is right that the gains come from finished simplification work, some of the people leaving are the ones who did that work.

Ask candidates directly: "Were you in the Claude Code rollout? What did you use it for, and what did compliance let you ship?" Their specific answers will tell you more than a resume line.

When is the right time to contact affected engineers?

Now, before their exit date. In the UK, the cuts are subject to consultation, so affected engineers may be on notice or garden leave into early 2027. That gives you a window of access before they're officially on the market.

Garden leave is a notice period during which an employee is still on the payroll and bound by their contract but is no longer working. They can't start with you until it ends, but they can talk to you and accept an offer.

Here's the timeline as reported:

MilestoneTiming
Announcement with Q3 resultsOctober 22, 2026
Roles already cutabout 1,000
Remaining cuts dueby end of 2026
Likely UK notice / garden leave tailinto early 2027

The consultation process is UK-specific, so check how notice works for each Pune candidate rather than assuming the same timeline. Either way, a conversation before someone's exit date beats one after it. Barclays isn't the only bank releasing engineers, either: Standard Chartered previously announced more than 7,000 cuts over four years.

A sourcing playbook before the December deadline

To hire ex-Barclays engineers, search by grade, filter by location and current employer, level by scope, and get in touch before consultation ends. Here is the sequence I'd run.

  1. Pick your geography first. Decide whether your req can hire in Pune, Knutsford/Radbroke, Glasgow and Edinburgh, or New Jersey. With India holding 3.3x the UK Java pool, that one decision matters more than any keyword.
  2. Search on grade plus stack, not function. Use AVP, VP, Assistant Vice President and BA4 alongside Java, KDB or PySpark. Drop "software engineer" from the query entirely.
  3. Confirm current employer. Remove alumni already at Wise, Amazon, JPMorganChase or Wells Fargo, unless you want them as warm referrers into their old teams.
  4. Level by scope. Map VP to staff or tech lead and AVP to senior, then confirm on the screen call.
  5. Open with the specifics. Mention their stack, their command centre and the Claude Code rollout. Skip the line about having heard about the layoffs.
  6. Price by location. The Levels.fyi medians are blended, so expect Pune offers to land below them.

Step 2 is where outbound quietly fails, because the grade-title problem doesn't show up as an error. It shows up as a suspiciously small result count.

FAQ

How many software developers are affected by the Barclays job cuts?

Barclays hasn't published a developer-specific number. Of the roughly 4,000 cuts still to come, about 60% (around 2,400) fall in support functions that explicitly include software developers. A "~3,000" figure applies the 60% to the full 5,000, which the reporting doesn't support.

What does AVP mean at Barclays for an engineer?

AVP (Assistant Vice President) is a corporate grade, not a management title. Engineers describe it as roughly equivalent to SDE2 or senior engineer at a tech company. It sits above BA4 and below VP. A Barclays VP who codes is typically a tech lead, closer to a staff engineer than an executive.

Should UK fintechs focus on London for ex-Barclays talent?

Not only London. Barclays runs a technology Command Centre at Radbroke in Knutsford, and Glasgow and Edinburgh appear in the UK talent pool. India is bigger still: Refolk's index shows 2,654 Barclays-linked Java profiles in India against 795 in the UK, with 68% of the sampled AVP/VP engineers in Pune.

When should recruiters contact affected Barclays engineers?

Before they leave. UK cuts are subject to consultation, and affected staff may be on notice or garden leave into early 2027. Contacting them in November or December means you talk to them while they're still deciding, not after their exit date.
