a16z Cut Its Recruiting Team. 1,076 Founders Now Source Alone.

Andreessen Horowitz cut its 34-person Full Stack Talent team on Oct 14, 2026. Here is the math on what founders and displaced recruiters do next.

On Oct 14, 2026 Axios reported that Andreessen Horowitz laid off the majority of its 34-person Full Stack Talent team, with the handful of survivors reassigned into the growth and crypto investment groups. If you run one of the 1,076 companies on a16z's portfolio page, the shared recruiter you were quietly counting on is gone. If you were one of those recruiters, you woke up Wednesday competing with 21,948 other technical sourcers for a very small number of good landing spots.

This piece does the math on both sides.

What actually happened on Oct 14

Andreessen Horowitz dismantled its centralized portfolio-recruiting group and pushed the remnant into specialized investment pods. Per Axios, "the plan is to let each group build its own team to meet its own needs, rather than relying on a centralized group." As of Oct 15 the firm's team page still listed all 34 names under Full Stack Talent, which is the website lagging reality, not a reprieve.

The headline numbers:

  • 34 people on the Full Stack Talent team pre-cut.
  • "Majority" laid off, which conservatively means ~25 departures.
  • ~9 recruiters retained and scattered into growth and crypto verticals.
  • 1,076 portfolio companies listed on a16z's site.
  • 10,000+ candidate placements per year through the a16z talent network at its peak, per valueaddvc.com.

The timing is not subtle. In the same news window, CoreWeave bonds hit distress levels, Firmus pulled its IPO, and Character AI, which a16z led at a $1B valuation in 2023, filed for bankruptcy. When your logo wall is actively burning, concierge recruiting for seed companies is the first operational line a managing partner cuts.

The portfolio-to-recruiter math was never real

The old a16z pitch of a shared recruiting bench was always lead-gen for retained search firms, not a sourcing engine. 1,076 portfolio companies divided by 34 recruiters is roughly 32 companies per recruiter. Nobody runs 32 live searches. What those recruiters actually did was triage: take the inbound VP and C-suite requests from the companies that mattered to the fund, route the rest to a retained firm with the current MSA.

Post-cut, the math is worse before it is better.

Sequoia talent cut, July 2023~1/3Forbes

Nine recruiters covering 1,076 companies is a mail-forwarding address with a Slack channel. And once those nine are siloed into growth or crypto, a founder building infrastructure for consumer AI has nobody to call at all. Verticalization kills the one thing the shared bench was good for, which was moving a candidate across the portfolio.

Why Sequoia already did this in 2023

The precedent you want to study is Sequoia's July 2023 cut of a third of its talent team, which followed Jaime Bott's departure after 12 years running that function. Sequoia COO Sumaiya Balbale told Forbes that "especially during the peak years of 2021 and 2022, the talent needs of our portfolio tripled. As the market corrected, there was a pause and the number of inbound requests and hiring needs that our companies were asking of us decreased."

a16z is three years late to the same realization, and the mechanism is identical:

  1. ZIRP bubble inflates portfolio hiring to absurd volumes.
  2. VC platform teams staff up to meet the demand.
  3. Rates rise, hiring collapses, inbound requests disappear.
  4. The platform team becomes an unamortized fixed cost against a management fee that no longer stretches.
  5. Partners cut it, with the public rationale that "verticalized" or "embedded" service is more aligned.

Expect Insight Partners, Accel, and Founders Fund, all named by valueaddvc.com as running full-time embedded recruiting teams, to arrive at the same conclusion within 12 months. If you are a founder in any of those portfolios, do not wait for the memo.

With ~9 Full Stack Talent members retained and 1,076 portfolio companies on the site, the "shared recruiter" model is now a mailing list.

What founder-led hiring actually requires in 2026

Startup sourcing without a VC recruiter is not harder than it was in 2019, but you have to run it as a function rather than a favor. The founders who do this well treat sourcing as a weekly cadence with named tools, named owners, and a candidate list that lives somewhere other than a partner's inbox.

A minimum viable stack for a Series Seed through Series B company:

  • One LinkedIn Recruiter seat, or a shared LinkedIn Recruiter Lite plus a sourcing tool with real search.
  • A plain-English search layer so the founder can describe a candidate without learning Boolean. This is the exact gap Refolk closes: you type "staff infra engineer who shipped at Stripe or Databricks, now at a 200-person company, open to San Francisco" and get a ranked shortlist across GitHub, LinkedIn, and the open web.
  • An ATS that is not a Google Sheet.
  • A fractional sourcer or senior recruiter for 10 to 20 hours a week during active searches.
  • A standing 30 minute weekly pipeline review with the hiring manager.

The founder's job in that stack is to write the search brief, approve the first 20 profiles, and send the first outbound message in their own voice. The tool's job is to compress the week of Boolean fiddling that used to sit between "I need a staff engineer" and "here are 40 real humans." That is the piece a16z was selling, and it is now a line item on a monthly invoice.

The ~25 ex-a16z recruiters are landing into a thin door

This is the part nobody at a going-away party will tell them: the senior in-house talent-leadership market in the US is small, and the IC sourcing market is enormous. In Refolk's index of professional profiles there are 21,948 Technical Recruiters and Technical Sourcers currently employed in the US. There are only 1,362 Senior, Director, or VP level Head of Talent, Head of People, or Founding Recruiter seats across the entire country. That is roughly a 16 to 1 ratio of IC supply to leadership demand.

A VC-platform recruiter who ran a book of 30 portfolio companies at a16z thinks of themselves as a Head of Talent. The market thinks of them as a very senior IC with no direct-hire P&L and no team they ever managed to a plan. The pitch of "Founding Recruiter at Series A" sounds romantic until you see the comp: typically 40 to 60% below VC-platform cash, with equity that mostly goes to zero.

From Refolk's index. The ~25 displaced a16z recruiters will compete here against a much larger pool of in-house candidates with direct full-cycle wins.

The ex-a16z recruiters who land best in the next 90 days will:

  • Pick a vertical (crypto, infra, defense, applied AI) and own it publicly within two weeks.
  • Build a public pipeline post, not a job board subscription. Operators hire from substacks now.
  • Take one Founding Recruiter role at a Series A they actually believe in, and treat it as a two-year bet, not a resume line.
  • Avoid the trap of "fractional recruiter for 5 startups at once," which is the a16z job minus the brand, the salary, and the 401k.

What founders should do in the next 30 days

Treat Oct 14 as the formal end of the "we help you hire" era and build the function you already needed. The three moves that matter:

  1. Write down your hiring plan through Q2 2027. Role, level, location, start-by date, and the one metric that would make the hire obviously right. If you cannot write it down, no recruiter at any firm could have helped you anyway.
  2. Buy the stack. A LinkedIn Recruiter seat, an ATS, a plain-English sourcing layer, and 10 to 20 hours a week of a fractional sourcer or senior recruiter. Total cost under $4,000/month fully loaded, which is less than one month of a retained-search success fee.
  3. Make an ask of your a16z partner that respects the new reality. Not "please source for me." Instead: "introduce me to the three best Founding Recruiters you know who just left Full Stack Talent." Some of those 25 people are excellent, and the partner still owns the relationship with them for about six weeks.
The shared recruiter model was always lead-gen for retained search. The layoff just makes the invoice visible to founders.

Who moves next

Watch Insight, Accel, and Founders Fund. Rounds (rounds.so), which already markets itself as the on-call talent partner for Sequoia portfolio companies and promises pre-qualified finalists in three weeks, will try to run the same play against the a16z gap. Expect two or three more branded vendors to announce a16z-adjacent "portfolio talent" offerings before the end of November, most of them staffed by the people who got cut on the 14th.

For sourcers watching from outside, the useful read is this: when the firm that placed 10,000 candidates a year decides the economics do not work, the correct response is not sympathy, it is to notice that the sourcing problem just moved. It is now distributed across 1,076 founders, each of whom now owns a small, urgent, under-resourced version of what a16z's bench used to run. That is a bigger market than the one you had on Monday, not a smaller one.

FAQ

Does the a16z Full Stack Talent layoff mean the fund is in trouble?

Not directly. It means the fund decided that centralized portfolio recruiting does not drive LP returns, which is the same conclusion Sequoia reached in July 2023 when it cut a third of its talent team. The timing lands alongside visible portfolio stress (Character AI bankruptcy, CoreWeave bond distress, Firmus pulling its IPO), but platform-team cuts are a management-fee math problem more than a fund-performance signal.

If I am an a16z portfolio founder, who do I call for a VP Engineering search now?

For a VP or C-suite search, call a retained firm directly. The large retained search firms were doing the actual work on the senior searches a16z brokered anyway. For director level and below, stand up your own sourcing stack with a LinkedIn Recruiter seat, a plain-English search tool, and a fractional senior recruiter for 10 to 20 hours a week. Do not wait for a replacement platform to be announced.

Where will the ~25 displaced a16z recruiters land?

Most will take Founding Recruiter or Head of Talent roles at Series A and Series B companies, often at 40 to 60% less cash than VC-platform comp. A handful will join vendors like Rounds that are racing to fill the portfolio-services gap. A smaller number will start fractional practices, which works for the top three or four names and is a slow decline for everyone else. The 1,362 senior in-house talent seats in Refolk's US index are the real ceiling, and they turn over slowly.

Is this the end of VC platform teams in general?

It is the end of the centralized, shared-recruiter version of the model. Expect the surviving structure to look like what a16z is building now: small, vertical, embedded in investment pods, measured on specific logo wins rather than aggregate placement volume. Insight, Accel, and Founders Fund are the next three to watch over the next 12 months.
