Substack empowers independent writers, artists, videographers, podcasters, and creators of all types to create, share, and make a living off their work through subscriptions, while offering them creative freedom, ownership, and a direct connection to their audiences.

We're looking for a Senior Communications Manager, Shows to lead Substack's communications efforts across its audio and video offerings. Working closely with product, creator partnerships, and editorial, this person will own audio and video product communications and develop creative, integrated initiatives that highlight our products, elevate the creators building on the platform, and help Substack reach new audiences.

The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and creative thinker with sharp editorial instincts, deep knowledge of the audio and video creator ecosystem, and strong industry relationships. They know how to use editorial, social, publicity, partnerships, and events to reach different audiences, and are just as comfortable developing a strategy as they are executing it.

This position will sit on the Brand & Communications team and will report directly to the Communications Lead.

Core responsibilities

  • Lead audio and video storytelling. Own and execute an integrated communications strategy across editorial, social, publicity, events, and creator channels, driving awareness of Substack's audio and video offerings.

  • Own product storytelling and education. Lead communications for Substack's audio and video products, from launches and feature announcements to ongoing storytelling and creator education, working closely with product and creator partnerships to proactively identify opportunities and bring them to life.

  • Elevate creators. Build an ongoing pipeline of stories about podcasters and video-first creators building on Substack, developing content and campaigns across owned and earned channels.

  • Identify industry opportunities. Stay close to the podcasting and video landscape, including competitor platforms, emerging trends, and industry conversations, to identify opportunities for Substack and bring insights back to product and storytelling.

  • Shape our presence at industry events. Bring a strong perspective to Substack’s presence at major industry gatherings, including SXSW and podcast festivals. Work closely with events and creator partnerships to identify opportunities, shape compelling programming and storytelling, and ensure our presence builds awareness of Substack and elevates creators on the platform.

  • Be a voice in the creator ecosystem. Serve as a visible voice for Substack’s audio and video offerings, building in public, sharing stories and insights, and actively participating in the conversations shaping podcasting and video. Build relationships and engage directly with creators and industry voices across X, YouTube, Substack, and other relevant channels.

About You

  • 6+ years of relevant experience. Experience developing and executing integrated communications strategies across earned, owned, social, and experiential channels.

  • Exceptional writer and editor. Sharp editorial judgment and the ability to identify compelling stories, develop strong angles, and write clear, engaging content across formats.

  • Creator ecosystem fluency. Understands where conversations and influence happen across the audio and video creator ecosystem, from traditional media to podcasts, social platforms, and creator communities. Comfortable building in public, engaging directly with creators and industry voices, and representing Substack in those conversations.

  • Audio and video expertise. Deep knowledge of the podcasting and YouTube ecosystems, ideally with firsthand experience creating, producing, or growing shows.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit. Creative, proactive, and self-directed, with the ability to spot opportunities, develop ideas, and execute independently in a fast-moving environment.

  • Engage with all voices. Willing to collaborate with any writer or creator on the platform regardless of their views.

  • Flexibility to travel. Available to travel to oversee on-site execution when needed.

  • Location. Based in San Francisco (preferred) or New York City.
