About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Stripe’s mission is to increase the GDP of the internet and we have a staggering amount of work to do. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the team
Our tax team works with Stripes across the company to build an efficient, scalable tax operating model as our international business grows, enters new markets and launches new products. We are looking for an experienced tax leader to own Stripe’s India tax agenda and serve as the principal tax partner for our business and entities in India.
This role has a broad remit across all India tax matters - leading direct tax, tax compliance and controls, controversy, planning, policy developments, product and market expansion, and business advisory, and partnering closely with Stripe's global SME teams on India-specific indirect tax and transfer pricing matters. A central focus will be leading India tax controversy: developing audit and litigation strategy, managing interactions with tax authorities and external advisers, and driving matters to effective resolution. You will work closely with colleagues across Finance, Legal, Treasury, Product, Partnerships, Operations and Policy. The position will be based in Bangalore and report to the APAC Head of Tax.
What you will do
- Own and lead Stripe's end-to-end India tax agenda, setting priorities and providing clear, practical advice on all material India tax matters, escalating and aligning with SME teams on positions within their remit.
- Manage India tax controversy, including risk assessment, audit and litigation strategy, responses to information requests and notices, engagement with tax authorities, management of external counsel and advisers, and resolution of disputes.
- Identify emerging India tax risks and opportunities, maintain a clear view of exposures, and communicate recommendations and decisions to senior Tax, Finance and business stakeholders.
- Build and maintain robust India tax controls, documentation and processes, partnering with Accounting and other teams to ensure accurate, timely and audit-ready compliance.
- Advise on India aspects of new products, commercial arrangements, entity and operating-model changes, product expansion, intercompany transactions and strategic initiatives.
- Monitor and interpret legislative, regulatory and administrative developments in India, assess their impact on Stripe and lead implementation of required changes.
- Develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders, tax authorities, industry bodies and external advisers, representing Stripe effectively on India tax matters.
- Partner with the APAC and global tax teams on regional and global initiatives, sharing India expertise and ensuring consistency with Stripe’s broader tax strategy.
We are looking for someone with
- 12+ years of relevant India tax experience in a Big 4 firm, law firm and/or multinational organisation, with demonstrated ownership of complex tax matters.
- A professional qualification such as Chartered Accountant, lawyer or equivalent, and deep technical knowledge of Indian corporate and indirect tax law.
- Significant hands-on experience leading India tax audits, assessments, appeals or litigation, including developing controversy strategy and engaging with tax authorities and advisers.
- Broad working knowledge of Indian direct and indirect taxes, transfer pricing, and withholding tax, with demonstrated ownership of tax compliance, controls, controversy and business advisory for a multinational group, and experience partnering effectively with global SME teams.
- Strong judgement and the ability to translate complex tax issues into clear, pragmatic recommendations for non-tax stakeholders and senior leaders.
- A track record of working independently, setting priorities and driving cross-functional matters to resolution in a fast-moving environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the credibility to represent Stripe externally and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Flexibility to adapt quickly to changes in tax law, administrative practice and Stripe’s business.
- A willingness to work with a diverse set of individuals who care deeply about Stripe’s tax issues and each other.
It would be nice if you have
- Experience working in a high-growth, rapidly scaling environment.
- Experience in technology, payments or financial services.
- Experience with tax policy or industry engagement in India.
- Familiarity with international tax issues.
‘Nice to have’ really means ‘nice to have’. It’s completely possible that you don’t have any of these and are still a great fit for the team.
