About this role

About Pylon

America’s $13T mortgage market is one of the most important financial systems in the world. It underwrites the middle class and is the mechanism through which millions of families build wealth. But while every other financial instrument has been simplified to an API call, mortgages are still assembled by hand.

We started from zero and created the first vertically integrated mortgage platform that turns origination into a single API.

Publicly traded companies and the country’s largest originators are already building on Pylon. Revenue is compounding monthly. We’re backed by Peter Thiel, Conversion Capital, QED, Citi, Fifth Wall, and the founders of Ramp, Blend, and Mercury.

Working at Pylon isn’t for those seeking comfort. The people who thrive here have high agency, strong opinions, and a track record of delivering outcomes without direction. Many of us are former founders. We move quickly, challenge each other directly, and take full ownership of results. It’s hard work, but it will be worth it.

Join us in building America’s mortgage rails.

Role Overview

Pylon is building software-driven mortgage processing. Rather than scaling a traditional processing department alongside loan volume, we are building a platform that automates routine diligence, document handling, workflow progression, and coordination.

As Head of Processing, you will bring deep mortgage-processing expertise into that system. You will own the operating model, exceptions, controls, and domain knowledge required to help Product and Engineering automate more of the work safely and accurately over time.

Responsibilities

  • Own processing domain expertise from submission through underwriting readiness.

  • Identify repetitive processing work that should be standardized, automated, or eliminated.

  • Translate processing workflows, edge cases, and expert judgment into product requirements and operating rules.

  • Build human-review queues, SLAs, escalation paths, and controls for unsupported or ambiguous cases.

  • Establish metrics for cycle time, manual touches, aging, exception rates, quality, and automated workflow coverage.

  • Partner closely with Account Management, Underwriting, Product, and Engineering.

  • Diagnose root causes behind aging, rework, bottlenecks, and automation failures.

  • Build training and operating systems for the human exception layer as volume grows.

Qualifications

  • Significant mortgage processing leadership experience at a scaled lender.

  • Strong preference for wholesale mortgage experience.

  • Experience operating at hundreds or thousands of loans per month.

  • Strong analytical and operational judgment.

  • Proven ability to improve throughput, quality, cycle time, or workflow design.

  • Comfortable making implicit operational knowledge explicit enough for technical teams to encode.

What success looks like

Pylon can materially increase monthly loan volume while the amount of routine human processing per loan declines. Human processors focus on the cases where judgment actually matters, and every recurring manual task becomes a candidate for product improvement.

About Pylon

The $13T mortgage industry at the heart of the American economy still runs on phone calls, browser tabs, and 20th-century workflows. While payments and banking moved into the API era, mortgage origination costs have doubled to $12,000 per loan, undermining originator economics and homeowner affordability. At Pylon, we aren’t optimizing around the edges…we’re rebuilding America’s mortgage infrastructure from the ground up. We’re the first vertically integrated mortgage infrastructure platform to automate the entire mortgage lifecycle, from application to settlement. We empower brokers, lenders, and fintechs to launch world-class mortgage products and make 102bps+ more per loan through: • Direct Wall Street pricing • 74% lower cost to originate • API-first extensibility We’re proud to power mortgage products for a growing portfolio of private and publicly traded companies. Our mission is backed by the architects of modern fintech, including Peter Thiel, Conversion Capital, QED, Citi, Fifth Wall, and the founders of Ramp, Blend, and Mercury.
