If you were laid off from a software, support, or solutions engineering job, forward deployed engineer roles look like the obvious way back in: FDE postings have grown more than tenfold while Bay Area engineering layoffs nearly doubled. The catch is that FDE hiring loops are decided by how you handle customers, and most engineering resumes leave that half of the work out.
The story people keep passing around is Bloomberg's piece on jobless tech workers missing out on San Francisco's AI boom. It ran in mid-September 2026 and came back to the Hacker News front page on Nov 2. The numbers in it are real: Salesforce has said it wants 1,000 FDEs, OpenAI and Anthropic advertise ranges that go past $300,000, and Bay Area layoff notices hit more than 14,500. But the Salesforce figure dates back to fall 2025, and it means less for outside applicants than the headline suggests.
What is a forward deployed engineer?
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who builds and ships inside a customer's environment, and who owns the customer relationship as well as the code. Palantir created the role, and in Refolk's index of professional profiles it is still the top FDE employer in both the US and UK samples.
Salesforce's setup shows the job most clearly. Its FDEs work in pods:
- One deployment strategist plus two engineers
- About three months full time on a single client
- Post-sale work: deploying Agentforce AI agents inside customers' existing environments
Startups describe the same job at a smaller scale. Nango (YC W23) describes its founding FDE role as "frequent customer calls, Slack conversations, and pairing sessions alongside hands-on coding." Look at the order. Coding comes last on that list, and your resume has to reflect that.
How fast is FDE hiring growing?
FDE demand has grown more than tenfold while demand for general software engineers fell. That gap is what makes the title a real way back in for laid-off engineers.
- Bay Area: FDE postings are up nearly 600% since 2022, with a median advertised salary of $202,300, according to Lightcast. Over the same period, demand for software engineers in the Bay Area fell 42%.
- Nationally: postings rose more than 1,000% from January through August 2026 compared with the same months in 2025. Broader tech postings grew 13%.
- Indeed's count: 643 FDE postings in April 2025, 5,330 in April 2026.
- Layoffs: more than 14,500 Bay Area workers received notices in the 12 months ending June 2026, almost double the previous fiscal year.
Postings overstate the seats
A posting is not a hire. Plank counted 1,333 live FDE postings across 565 companies, about 2.4 per company. For most teams that means one or two hires, not a hiring spree.
The number of people who already hold the title is small too. In Refolk's index, 3,681 US profiles carry an FDE-variant title. That count includes loose matches like "Co-Founder and FDE," so treat it as an upper bound. Plank's outside estimate is 650 to 885 FDEs in the US.
| Population | Count | Source |
|---|---|---|
| FDE-titled profiles, US | 3,681 | Refolk's index |
| FDE-titled profiles, UK | 578 | Refolk's index |
| Solutions/sales engineer profiles, US | 36,337 | Refolk's index |
| Salesforce FDE hiring target | 1,000 | Bloomberg/SFGate |
| Bay Area tech layoff notices (12 mo. to June 2026) | 14,500+ | Bloomberg / CA EDD |
Even with the generous count, that comes to about 3.9 Bay Area layoff notices for every US FDE. Few people in that pool already hold the title, so most hires have to come from people who did the work under a different one. Your resume has to show that you're one of them.
Salesforce's 1,000 seats started as an internal program
Salesforce's 1,000-FDE target started as an internal mobility program, not an external hiring push. In fall 2025, the company's talent chief gave the FDE goal as an example of helping existing staff swap jobs even during layoffs, well before the number turned up in coverage of the AI hiring boom.
Now look at the external openings. As of Sept 2, a third-party tracker counted about 65 FDE-titled reqs across six continents, with new ones posting weekly, and the India reqs had already closed. Outside applicants are competing for a small share of a target that was built around internal transfers. For scale, 1,000 seats would be about 27% of the current US FDE population, even on the generous index count.
Salesforce's minimum bar is specific:
- 3+ years of software engineering or technical delivery experience
- At least one production AI, data engineering, or enterprise integration system deployed to production
Read the second line twice. "Deployed to production" means a real environment, real users, and someone outside your team who depended on it.
So even with all the headlines, this is a hard market. You have a few dozen external reqs, internal transfers aimed at the same target, and a large pool of recently laid-off engineers. Basem Istanbouli, an ex-Googler, founded un(PTO), which has grown to more than 1,700 members. In a queue like that, cold applications mostly go unanswered.
New York, not San Francisco, is the FDE hub
Most FDE postings are in New York, even though the coverage focuses on San Francisco. One posting analysis found New York holds 35% of FDE postings against San Francisco's 11%.
Refolk's index shows the same pattern. In a 25-profile sample of US FDEs, New York appeared 9 times and San Francisco 6 (metro labels included), and Palantir was the top employer with 6 of the 25. Outside the US, the index holds 578 UK FDE profiles, mostly in London, at employers including Palantir, ElevenLabs and the OpenAI Deployment Company.
If you were laid off in the Bay Area and you're only searching San Francisco, you're missing most of the market. Add New York roles to your search even if you'd rather not move.
Forward deployed engineer vs solutions engineer
A solutions engineer works pre-sale to help close deals. A forward deployed engineer works post-sale to get the product running inside the customer's environment, and almost never carries a quota. One tracker puts the difference plainly: SEs demo Salesforce products to prospects and help close deals, while FDEs deploy Agentforce AI agents inside existing customer environments.
Pay structure shows the same split. Bloomberry reviewed 1,000 FDE posts: 70% mentioned equity, and 0% were quota-carrying jobs.
| Solutions engineer | Forward deployed engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Stage | Pre-sale | Post-sale |
| Core work | Demo products to prospects, help close deals | Deploy systems inside existing customer environments |
| Quota | Tied to closing deals | 0% of posts in Bloomberry's review |
| Equity | Not covered in the review | Mentioned in 70% of posts |
Solutions engineers are the biggest group that can move over. Refolk's index shows about 9.9 US solutions and sales engineers for every FDE. The problem is that an SE resume reads as pre-sales. Closed-won revenue and demo counts tell an FDE hiring manager that you sell. They don't tell them that you ship.
If you're an SE making the switch:
- Cut quota attainment and pipeline numbers, or move them to one line at the bottom.
- Replace "demo" with what you actually built: the proof of concept, the integration, the data pipeline.
- Name the point where your work reached production, and who ran it after you left.
- Keep the discovery calls. Scoping a messy customer requirement is the FDE skill most SWEs can't show.
What does the FDE interview actually screen for?
The FDE loop is mostly decided by the customer case study. According to a10x.dev, it has the lowest pass rate (around 40%) and the highest weight (around 30% of the decision). You still have to clear the coding bar, but this is the round where the most candidates fall out.
It is also the most heavily weighted round, at roughly 30% of the hiring decision.
The case study and the client-simulation rounds test customer judgment: can you break down an unclear customer problem and handle the client while you do it. The hiring-manager screen runs the same test with one question: "Who was your customer, and how did you measure success?"
Your resume sets up that question. If no bullet names a customer, the interviewer has nothing specific to ask about, and you get generic questions. Some companies put the requirement right in the posting. Kyber (kyber.tech, hiring across Paris, San Francisco and Singapore) asks for "prior experience as a forward deployed / customer / field engineer or solutions architect." Those are the titles the person reading your resume is looking for.
How to write a forward deployed engineer resume
The strongest FDE resume bullet is a normal SWE bullet that keeps going until it reaches the customer's result. "I reduced query time by 40%" is a standard SWE line. The FDE version goes on to say what the customer's analysts could do afterward that they couldn't do before.
An FDE bullet is a SWE bullet that keeps going until the customer shows up.
Use this structure for each bullet:
- The customer. Name them, or describe them if you're under NDA ("a regional bank," "a hospital network").
- The situation. What was broken, blocked, or escalated, and who asked for help.
- What you built. The stack goes here, in one short phrase, not as a list.
- The customer's outcome. What their people could do afterward. Use their metric, not your team's.
Where each background finds its customer stories
- Software engineers: onsite integrations, enterprise customer migrations, any feature you scoped directly with a design partner, and on-call incidents where a named customer was on the call.
- Support engineers: escalations. You already have the FDE stories: a customer in trouble, an unclear problem, a fix under pressure. Lead with the root cause and the code you shipped, and put ticket counts after them.
- Solutions engineers: proofs of concept that became production deployments. Leave out the deal size and lead with what was still running after the deal closed.
Writing these bullets takes time, and redoing them for every posting takes much longer, because each posting weights the two halves differently. Salesforce asks for a system deployed to production. Nango leads with customer calls and pairing sessions. This is the work Refolk does for you: paste the posting, and it rewrites your resume from your own history so the customer outcomes from past jobs sit next to the stack that posting asks for. Refolk also scores how well you fit, which matters when the bar is "at least one system deployed to production." You find out whether you clear it before you spend an application on it.
For the cover letter, pick one customer story and tell it in full: the customer, the situation, the scoping decision, the result. The hiring manager will ask about that story in the first screen anyway.
What does a forward deployed engineer earn?
Advertised FDE pay runs from $120,000 at a YC startup to $320,000 at Anthropic, and equity is common: 70% of the posts Bloomberry reviewed mentioned it. These are the advertised ranges:
| Employer / source | Advertised range or median |
|---|---|
| Anthropic (SF) | $280,000 to $320,000 |
| OpenAI (SF) | $185,000 to $300,000 + equity |
| Lightcast, Bay Area median | $202,300 |
| Bloomberry, 1,000-post median | $173,816 |
| Nango (YC W23), founding FDE | $120,000 to $200,000 + 0.05% to 0.15% |
Bloomberg's reporting gives a wider OpenAI range: almost 20 FDE postings, with salaries from around $145,000 to $325,000 plus equity.
Bloomberry found no quota-carrying FDE posts, so you can compare base pay plus equity directly. With an SE offer you'd have to discount for commission risk.
FAQ
How do I become a forward deployed engineer without the title?
Show that you've done the work under a different title. Salesforce's bar is 3+ years of software or technical delivery experience plus one production AI, data engineering, or enterprise integration system. Rewrite your top three bullets so each one names a customer and that customer's outcome. Apply to New York roles as well as San Francisco ones, since New York holds about 35% of postings.
Is moving from software engineer to forward deployed engineer a step down?
The advertised pay doesn't look like one. Lightcast's Bay Area median for FDE postings is $202,300, and Anthropic advertises $280,000 to $320,000. The real tradeoff is how you spend your time. Salesforce pods spend about three months full time on one client, and Nango lists customer calls and Slack conversations ahead of hands-on coding.
What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a solutions engineer?
Solutions engineers are pre-sale and help close deals. Forward deployed engineers are post-sale and deploy systems inside existing customer environments. Bloomberry found that 0% of 1,000 FDE posts were quota-carrying. If you're a solutions engineer moving over, replace demo and pipeline language with what you built and shipped.
Should my forward deployed engineer resume still list my tech stack?
Yes, but inside the bullets, not as the headline. The customer case study carries about 30% of the decision and passes only about 40% of candidates, so your resume should give the interviewer a named customer to ask about. Put the stack in the "what you built" part of each bullet and keep the separate skills section short.
