Tokopedia Is Down to 250 People. Source the Other 2,250 Before Shopee Does.

TikTok's Tokopedia cuts left ~2,250 Jakarta and Singapore engineers on the market. Here's how to source them by team, not title, before regional rivals close the window.

Tokopedia's July 1, 2026 town hall confirmed another ~450 cuts in the technology division. Stack that on top of June 2024, July 2025, and August 2025, and local reporting now puts headcount at roughly 10% of the ~2,500 employees TikTok inherited in January 2024. That is about 2,250 engineers, product managers, and data scientists off payroll in Jakarta and Singapore, and Special Presidential Advisor for Labor Said Iqbal showed up at the Kuningan office on July 7 to see for himself.

If you are hiring backend, search, ranking, payments, or live-commerce infra anywhere in Southeast Asia, this is the largest single pool of trained hyperscale-commerce talent that will hit the market this year. Shopee, Lazada, GoTo, Kredivo, and Superbank already know it. The question is whether you can source it faster than they can.

What actually happened between January 2024 and July 2026

ByteDance closed on a 75.01% stake in Tokopedia for $1.5 billion on January 31, 2024, folding TikTok Shop Indonesia into the combined entity while GoTo kept a minority stake. Combined headcount at merger was around 5,000. Through 2024 and 2025, TikTok trimmed operations, marketing, and logistics down to a reported 2,500. The 2026 rounds moved into core R&D.

The cadence, per Jakarta Globe and local reporting:

  • June 2024: ~450 employees cut
  • July 2025: ~180 workers
  • August 2025: ~240 workers
  • July 2026: 450+ in the technology division
2,250
Ex-Tokopedia engineers, PMs, and data scientists now on the market
The workforce is down to roughly 10% of the ~2,500 employees TikTok inherited in January 2024.

Nuraini Razak, ShopTokopedia's corporate affairs director, has spoken on record about the June 2026 round. Stephanie Susilo, executive director of TikTok and Tokopedia, gave the official framing to reporters: "There are no layoffs at TikTok or the TikTok Tokopedia Group. What we are doing is workforce restructuring and internal mobility within the TikTok Tokopedia Group." TikTok also says it is hiring for more than 100 open positions in Indonesia. Do the math and the net displacement is still north of 2,100 even on the most conservative reading.

This is not happening in isolation. GoTo, Tokopedia's former parent, cut from 7,522 employees in 2023 to 3,352 by 2024. Indonesia layoffs topped 23,000 across 2026. The Tokopedia cohort is landing in an already crowded market, which changes the sourcing math in ways most recruiters are misreading.

Why generalist recruiters will misprice this pool

The obvious read is "flooded market, lowball offers." That read is wrong above a certain level.

KiTalent's Indonesia comp data shows CTO and VP Engineering packages at TikTok-Tokopedia reaching IDR 6 billion (approximately USD 375,000) annually, plus RSU grants tied to ByteDance's valuation. Adjusted for Jakarta's cost of living, that is the local compensation ceiling. Meanwhile, specialized AI, compliance, and executive product roles remain undersupplied across Southeast Asia through 2026.

Translation: L4 to L5 generalists are genuinely price-flexible. Staff-plus engineers, ML infra leads, and product directors are not. They have severance runway, they know their comp anchor, and if you insult them they will take a remote role with a US or MENA social-commerce buyer instead. Whatnot, Noon, and Talabat's live-commerce arm are all viable exits for people who built creator payouts and live-selling infrastructure at hundreds-of-millions-of-user scale. That experience is globally rare. Price accordingly.

The Singapore leg is the sleeper

Almost all English-language reporting focuses on the Jakarta HQ and the Ciputra World 2 Tower in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, where Tempo interviewed two Tokopedia employees in June 2025. The Singapore regional office got cut too. Those engineers are already on Employment Passes. A Singapore-based founder can hire without new work-visa lead time, which is the definition of a time-limited window. Most sourcing lists will miss them because the Boolean filters default to Jakarta.

Where the diaspora is already landing

Refolk's index shows roughly 186 profiles matching ex-Tokopedia engineering, PM, and data candidates in Indonesia and Singapore. The top current employers post-transition already skew toward local fintech and consumer:

  • Stockbit
  • tiket.com
  • Kredivo Group
  • Superbank
  • Advance Intelligence Group
  • ASTRO

These are the companies that punch below TikTok's comp ceiling but offer equity upside. If your offer competes with any of them on equity, you have a shot. If you are trying to beat them on cash alone, you will lose the top of the pool.

The direct competitors watching this list are Shopee (Sea Ltd., Singapore HQ, with 4,500+ regional engineers), Lazada (Alibaba), a shrunken GoTo Group at 3,352 staff, and Bukalapak. Magpie IQ's month-by-month SKU tracking shows the Shopee versus TikTok Shop beauty GMV gap doubling from ~US$23M to ~US$47M across January to May 2026. Shopee is winning category share and needs the engineering capacity to keep pressing. They will not be shy.

number: $23M to $47M
label: Shopee vs TikTok Shop beauty GMV gap, Jan to May 2026
note: The gap doubled in five months. Shopee has both the momentum and the sourcing incentive to absorb this pool first.
