About this role
Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money - bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses.
Relay is entering an exciting new chapter of growth. We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to spearhead our core product teams through a period of rapid scaling, building systems that will power our growth and partner with our VP of Engineering to forge our next generation of leaders, ensuring engineering efforts and strategic product vision are perfectly aligned. If building the best in class banking product that is changing the way SMBs succeed speaks to you, we want to hear from you!
Please note that we are a hybrid environment and choose to collaborate in the office three days a week (Tues-Thurs).
What You’ll Be Doing:
Lead and scale our product engineering organization as we double and then triple in size. You’ll attract, hire, and develop exceptional engineers and leaders, building the foundation for Relay’s next stage of growth.
Own the growth and performance of our engineering team, ensuring every engineer has the clarity, coaching, and support they need to thrive and deliver high-impact work.
Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement that empowers teams to take smart risks, experiment, and build groundbreaking solutions for small businesses.
Refine our playbook for high-velocity development. You’ll evolve our engineering practices to eliminate friction, raise the quality bar, and enable consistent, fast, and reliable delivery as we scale.
Align engineering with Relay’s mission. Partner with Product, Design, and business leaders to translate strategy into a unified roadmap, making tough prioritization calls to focus on what matters most to our customers and the business.
Drive alignment and delivery across multiple teams, ensuring the right systems, rituals, and processes are in place for teams to execute effectively and sustainably.
Partner across the company to build the systems and tools that scale. You’ll help shape the infrastructure, processes, and culture that enable our teams and Relay as a whole to grow with confidence and clarity.
Who You Are:
You will leverage your 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading teams in high-growth environments, to inspire, scale, and guide your team in building exceptional products.
You apply your deep technical expertise and a track record of shipping impactful products to build scalable, reliable systems that accelerate delivery and empower teams to consistently delight customers and drive results.
You know how to build and scale an engineering team and support them in doing their best work
You have excellent communication skills and are able to calmly provide clarity in times of uncertainty or change
You're a pragmatic decision maker with a history of delivering product in startups - Intimately comfortable with shifting priorities, tradeoffs in scope, technical debt, tight timelines, etc. while also making the right decisions for customers.
You are highly customer focused and never lose sight of who we’re building for
You value creativity over capital - you’re able to think creatively to find solutions to tough problems without endless resources
You are an energetic and results-oriented person, you will lean on your experience delivering results to add value to our business and inspire the same ethos in your team.
You're highly collaborative and have a documented history of connecting the dots and managing cross-functional initiatives.
Bonus Points:
You’ve joined a company at its early stages and have seen it through scale
You have experience working in a fintech
The Interview Process:
Stage 1: A 45-minute Google Meets video call with a member of our Talent team
Stage 2: A 1-hour Google Meets video call with the hiring manager, our VP of Engineering
Stage 3: A 1-hour in person meeting with a member of our leadership team
Stage 4: A take-home case study followed by a 60-minute Google Meet video call with our team
Our Compensation Approach
We believe Relayers should feel rewarded for the impact they have on our mission and growth. Compensation follows impact. As impact increases, compensation grows, and we do not limit compensation changes to a once-a-year review cycle.
The annual salary range for this role is $270,000 CAD to $330,000 CAD.
For candidates who demonstrate full readiness for the defined scope of the role, the typical starting salary is $300,000 CAD per year. Offers below this point reflect candidates we believe can grow into the full scope of the role with support and development. Offers above this point reflect impact that meaningfully exceeds the role’s defined expectations or an expanded scope from day one.
We encourage you to have a conversation with your recruiter and ask questions about compensation throughout the hiring process. For more information on our compensation philosophy and perks and benefits, visit our Candidate Hub.
Why Relay Might Be the Perfect Fit For You
You push relentlessly for reinvention: You're always asking "how can this be better?" -- in your work, in your craft, in yourself. Comfort is a signal to push harder, not coast. You'd rather build something better than defend something familiar.
You crave autonomy: We trust our team with big challenges and the freedom to solve them. If you’re someone who takes initiative, is comfortable taking risks, and seeks input when needed, you’ll find the freedom here empowering.
You own your work: You take pride in your work, follow through on commitments, and feel a deep sense of responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks.
You build with AI, not just use it: You're actively embedding AI into how you work, pushing what's possible, and bringing your team along with you.
You care about impact, not noise: You care deeply about the substance of your work. You measure success by results, not recognition, and you let your work speak for itself.
You’re energized by complexity and ambiguity: You enjoy tackling problems that don’t come with a playbook. You’re comfortable building from scratch, iterating as you go, and collaborating to shape the best path forward.
You seek out feedback: You see directness as respect, not criticism. You actively seek input, sit with hard truths, and use feedback as fuel for improvement.
Small businesses are why we're here: Relay exists to help them thrive -- and that mission has to resonate with you.
