About this role
Please Note: To conform with the United States Government Space Technology Export Regulations, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., conditional resident, asylee or refugee (protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
At CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We take pride in our dynamic and cross-functional work environment, which allows us to learn, develop, and engage across our organization. If you are looking for hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work, CesiumAstro is the place for you. We are actively seeking passionate, collaborative, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals to join our team.
The Analog & Power Electronics team is responsible for developing advanced power electronics for our space and military products. We own analog and power electronics designs for multi-output power supply modules and for point of load (PoL) power supplies for RF and Digital boards. We are responsible for the entire development cycle from power architecture development to part selection, schematic and printed circuit board (PCB) design, verification testing, and production release. Designs encompass the entire spectrum of power supply development including power conversion, power management and control, fault management, and power filtering for low noise and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). We’re looking for summer interns to support our mission. Interns work side-by-side with experienced power electronics engineers. Interns in the Analog & Power team are typically responsible for design projects that directly contribute towards an on-going program or contribute towards advancing the Analog & Power Electronics team’s technology development road map. Interns will also gain valuable experience in hands-on laboratory characterization and troubleshooting of power electronics. To apply, please include a brief cover letter describing your interest in power or analog electronics hardware design.
REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Current enrollment in a Master of Science (MS), or PhD program in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an accredited university with a focus in analog or power electronics
- GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Strong fundamentals in electronics and completion of course work in one or more of the following areas: power electronics, modeling and control of power electronics, control theory, linear systems theory, non-linear system theory, power systems, and analog electronics
- Knowledge ofdifferent DC-DC power converter topologies (e.g.discrete linear regulator, Buck, Buck-boost, Flyback, Forward, Half-bridge, Full-bridge)
- Hands-on experience with lab instruments such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, frequency response and impedance analyzers, electronic loads, power sources, and signal generators
- Experience with analysis and simulation tools such as SPICE, LTSPICE, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, PLECS, Simulink, MATLAB, MathCAD, ANSYS Q3D and SiWave, or HyperLynx
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Practical experience designing and building power electronics hardware for a research project, competition team, extracurricular activity, prior internship, or for an advanced electronics engineering course
- Experience with electronics schematic capture and printed circuit board (PCB) layout tools such as Altium, OrCAD, Allegro or Xpedition
- Experience with power magnetics modeling, design and laboratory characterization
- Experience with voltage mode or peak current mode control, including control loop modeling and laboratory characterization
- Experience in power electronics applications utilizing GaN or SiC wide bandgap power semiconductor devices
- Knowledge of soft switching and resonant power converter topologies (e.g. LLC, CLLC, series resonant, phase shifted full bridge, dual active bridge, etc.)
- Programming skills to support hardware test and data processing(Python, MATLAB, etc.)
