Law Clerk (Part-Time)

Summary of role:

We are looking for a Law Clerk to support our legal team while we recruit for an Associate General Counsel. Our Law Clerk hire will work within the legal team to assist with researching and concisely summarizing evolving areas of the regulatory framework for self-funded third-party medical benefits administration. This is an excellent opportunity for 3L law student to gain hands-on experience working with a small in-house legal team (one a UB Law grad). You will be part of the legal team and have a chance to work within a contract management system and workflow improvements, engage with outside counsel if additional expertise is needed and work cross-functionally with the business. You will gain exposure to the Buffalo start up community and the chance to work with an experienced team of benefits and health tech leaders. The role is open immediately and is expected to be needed until the full time role is hired and onboarded, although there is the potential to continue for the Spring semester as well.

Responsibilities Include:

• Researching areas of health plan and third-party administrator compliance issues, with a significant focus in ERISA, Affordable Care Act, Consolidated Appropriations Act, MHPAEA and other federal laws and regulations

• Crafting clear, concise white papers and guidance documents - both for the legal department, as well as business audiences

• Prioritizing work relative to risk, importance and leveraging time management skills to complete tasks on a timely basis

• Interacting with cross-functional business departments to assist with project management of the operational implications of gaining compliance in evolving areas of the regulatory environment

• Developing a compliance library on key topics

• Assisting with reviewing, redlining commercial contracts at a national organization experiencing rapid growth

• Documenting and improving processes, including how to use system integrations and AI to build efficiencies.

Qualifications:

• Ability to prioritize and organize own work to meet deadlines

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak clearly and concisely, conveying complex or technical information in a manner that others can understand, as well as ability to understand and interpret complex information

• Strong interpersonal skills, establishing rapport and working well with others

• Advanced Microsoft Suite skills

Education and Experience:

• 3rd yr law student

• Interest in health care, health benefits, start-ups required, with a preference for some related experience and a substantial interest in gaining in-house experience

• Strong, clear research and writing skills.

Work Location:

• An ideal candidate would be a University at Buffalo Law student who would work from the Buffalo Office with flexibility for some work from home,

• While we believe that working in the Buffalo office would provide a better learning experience, we may consider remote candidates with a connection to Buffalo.
