As a Software Engineer in Tooling, you will build shared platforms, frameworks and automation that help engineers validate changes and release reliable device software. You will work across developer tooling, physical and virtual execution environments, observability and release-readiness capabilities. By collaborating with engineering teams across Adyen, you will improve developer experience and strengthen confidence in every release.
Payments Solution, Devices Stream
Adyen devices enable merchants with physical stores to accept card or eWallet present transactions. It's relevant for retailers in fashion, electronic and consumer goods, lifestyle and leisure (i.e. gyms, theme parks) and hospitality (i.e. hotels, quick service restaurants, bars, cafes).
Integrated with the Adyen platform, POS terminals help merchants to evolve and provide future focused in-store shopping experiences. Our one system, one partner and one contract set-up enables merchants to go global effortlessly with latest payment innovations and features.
Tooling
The Tooling teams build the shared platforms, frameworks and infrastructure that enable engineers to validate changes and release reliable software across Adyen’s device ecosystem.
Our scope spans the full validation and release lifecycle, from developer-facing test frameworks and execution workflows to physical device environments, release-readiness signals and reliability intelligence. We work closely with product engineering teams to make validation scalable, repeatable and easy to integrate into everyday development.
Our main areas of focus include:
- Validation platforms: Building shared frameworks and execution capabilities that support consistent validation across terminal, mobile and other device platforms.
- Developer tooling and automation: Creating workflows, scheduling, reporting and self-service tooling that improve developer experience and accelerate feedback.
- Release and reliability intelligence: Developing observability, coverage analytics, failure analysis and release-readiness signals that support data-driven delivery decisions.
- Device execution infrastructure: Engineering scalable physical and virtual execution environments, including large scalable device farms and robots.
- Specialised validation capabilities: Building environments and tooling for areas such as connectivity, performance, resilience and hardware-software integration.
The teams collaborate closely on shared platforms and outcomes, while maintaining clear ownership of individual components and technical domains. Together, we help engineering teams validate changes earlier, understand failures faster and ship device software with greater confidence.
What you’ll do:
As a Software Engineer in Tooling, you will:
- Build and evolve shared validation frameworks, execution workflows and developer-facing tooling.
- Work with physical and virtual device environments, including hardware-integrated execution where relevant.
- Develop observability, analytics and release-readiness capabilities that provide clear reliability signals.
- Improve developer experience by making validation easier to integrate, use and troubleshoot.
- Collaborate across teams to design scalable solutions and drive adoption.
Overall, you will help engineers validate changes faster and release device software with greater confidence.
Who you are
- An experienced software engineer interested in developer tooling, platforms and reliability.
- Comfortable working across software/hardware automation, infrastructure and observability.
- Pragmatic, data-driven and able to turn complex problems into scalable solutions.
- Collaborative, ownership-oriented and focused on building a strong developer experience.
- Adaptable and comfortable working in a dynamic environment with evolving priorities.
Minimum qualifications
- At least 3 years of professional software development experience.
- Experience with Kotlin or Java.
- Familiarity with Linux and/or Android environments.
- Experience applying modern software engineering practices to build maintainable and scalable systems.
Nice to have
- Full-stack experience.
- Keen on learning Hardware in the loop tooling, including networking.
- Experience working with Observability platforms and/or DevEx solutions.
