VW cut 50,000 more jobs on Sept 4 and JLR added 4,000 on Sept 7. Here is the resume pivot that beats the CARIAD flood into Tier-1 and defense.

On Sept 4, 2026, Volkswagen's supervisory board approved another 50,000 job cuts under "Future Plan 2030." Three days later, Jaguar Land Rover confirmed ~4,000 more, mostly office roles, over the next two years. If you are a powertrain, manufacturing, or vehicle-software engineer inside either group, the queue you are about to enter is not the one you think it is.

The pivot most VW and JLR engineers will get wrong

The better first move in September 2026 is Tier-1 suppliers and defense primes, not Rivian and Lucid. The EV-startup queue is already saturated and shrinking, and the skills from a VW or JLR badge translate more cleanly into aerospace and industrial automation than the job titles suggest.

The named employers matter more than the counts:

  • Powertrain landing pads: Ricardo, M-Sport, Gordon Murray, UTAC, Forseven. None of these are mass-market OEMs. Powertrain talent is already migrating into engineering-services and low-volume/performance work.
  • Embedded-SW landing pads: Bosch (5x more common in the index than any single OEM), ESR Labs, Altran, T&S. Tier-1s are the actual employer of record for AUTOSAR skill stacks.

Why "EV startup" is the wrong first pivot in September 2026

That last sentence does the translation work for the recruiter, which most defense-primes recruiters need because they do not know the automotive stack. CARIAD engineers should reframe as embedded systems engineers, not software engineers. Same underlying skill stack, different vocabulary, ~6x less competition in the defense and aerospace queue.

The 140-deep automotive-embedded-SW pool in Refolk's index all describe themselves as "software engineer." The 23-deep defense and aerospace systems pool describes itself as "systems engineer." A CARIAD engineer who spent three years on AUTOSAR tooling is a systems engineer in defense hiring language. Rewrite the top of your resume accordingly.

Should I take the voluntary severance or wait to be selected?

Take the voluntary package if the runway covers a meaningful upskilling window and you can start certifications (functional safety, ANSYS Fluent, BMS/Simulink) immediately.
