Samsung's Oct. 14 Cutoff: A Resume for the 739 Who Said No to Plano

Samsung's NJ WARN ends Oct. 14, 2026. Here is how the 739 Englewood Cliffs and Berkeley Heights exits should rewrite the resume this week.

If you are one of the 739 Samsung Electronics America employees whose last day lands between September 30 and October 14, 2026, you are walking into the market with a problem recruiters have not seen in a year of AI layoffs: you were not laid off, you were not performance-managed, and your title was not killed. Samsung moved. You stayed. The WARN says "transfer of operations." That is the exact phrase your resume and your LinkedIn headline should repeat, because the alternative, which recruiters will assume, is worse.

This piece is for the Englewood Cliffs and Berkeley Heights cohort specifically: sales directors, product and brand marketers, retail account leads, B2B mobile and displays people, and the corporate functions around them. The window to land before November hiring slows is roughly three weeks. Here is how to use it.

What the WARN actually says, and why that wording is your asset

The June 30, 2026 NJ WARN notice covers 739 roles at Englewood Cliffs and Berkeley Heights, with terminations starting September 30 and finishing October 14, 2026, and the stated reason is "transfer of operations" because Samsung Electronics America completed its U.S. headquarters move to Plano, Texas as of a September 25, 2026 update.

That phrasing matters. Samsung has never disclosed how many of the 739 declined the Plano relocation offer, so the public does not know who was pushed and who chose. For a candidate, that ambiguity is leverage: your resume gets to name the real reason.

Three concrete uses:

  • LinkedIn "About" line one: "Role eliminated via Samsung Electronics America NJ to Plano HQ consolidation; declined relocation."
  • Resume header, under the current role: add an end date of Oct 2026 and a parenthetical: "(SEA headquarters transfer to Plano, TX; declined relocation)."
  • Cover letter opener: reference the WARN by its filing language. A background check will confirm "transfer of operations" verbatim, which neutralizes the "were you let go for cause" filter recruiters quietly apply in Q4 2026.

Do not post a detailed narrative about Plano, Mayor Kranjac, or Rep. Gottheimer on a public feed before you sign the release. NJ WARN mandates 90-day notice, but severance is a separate agreement, and a screed on LinkedIn can cost you the check.

The cohort by the numbers

The 739 are overwhelmingly sales, marketing, and corporate functions, not engineers, because SEA runs U.S. sales and marketing for Samsung's displays, phones, TVs and home appliances. That is the lens for every resume rewrite below.

Two things fall out of this table and shape the rest of your week.

First, 62% of the state footprint is on the notice. Your network is on the notice with you, so the "ask a former colleague" play is going to be noisy. Prioritize contacts outside SEA: former Samsung alumni already placed at TCL North America, Resideo, LG, Whirlpool, Best Buy corporate, Verizon, T-Mobile, and the big-box retail account teams.

Second, the direct lateral market inside Consumer Electronics is near empty. In Refolk's index of professional profiles, only 24 US senior CE roles currently match the Samsung sales/marketing/product-marketing/brand archetype. Against 2,596 Samsung-affiliated US professionals, that is roughly 108 Samsung-tagged people per open direct-lateral seat. Waiting for "another SEA" is a losing strategy. The rewrite has to go cross-industry.

The four resume archetypes inside the 739

The 739 are not fungible. They split into four groups, each needing a different reframe, because the index's top SEA titles cluster into four patterns: retail-channel sales, product and brand marketing, B2B enterprise sales, and corporate operations.

1. Retail-channel sales (Lowe's, Best Buy, Costco, carrier)

If your title looks like "Director of Sales, Lowe's" or "Account Director, Best Buy," your resume should lead with sell-through dollars and door counts, not Samsung org charts. Hiring managers at Whirlpool, LG, TCL, and Resideo read account-leader resumes for three things: dollar volume on the account, promotional lift versus plan, and whether you own the joint business plan with the retailer.

Rewrite checklist:

  1. Replace "managed the Lowe's relationship" with the actual annual sell-through number and the YoY delta.
  2. Name the retailer buyer cadence (quarterly line reviews, annual JBP) so a reader at Whirlpool knows you have run their meeting.
  3. Pull SKU count and category (major appliances vs. small appliances vs. TV) into the first bullet. "Appliance" without category is invisible to a search.

2. Product and brand marketing (TV, mobile, appliances)

Resumes here get stuck on launch recaps. The CE and adjacent DTC market in late 2026 is hiring for retention and lifecycle, not launch theater. Reframe three launches you worked on as cohort outcomes: units sold in the first 90 days, attach rate on accessories, and the retention or trade-in metric at month 12.

3. B2B and enterprise sales (Mobile B2B, Displays, Knox)

The index shows multiple SEA titles like "Regional Director B2B Sales (Mobile)" and "Head of Direct Sales Mobile B2B." Pivot targets include digital-signage, MDM, and rugged-device vendors. Lead with pipeline you built, named logos you closed, and the sales cycle length. If you ran Knox deals, say "endpoint security and MDM" in the resume body, because that is the keyword the lateral market indexes on, not "Knox."

4. Corporate operations, legal, finance

The thinnest lateral market inside Samsung, the deepest outside. Treat this as a "name the CPG precedent" problem: Unilever vacated 700 Sylvan Ave. in Englewood Cliffs before Samsung moved in, and that CPG talent got reabsorbed by Hoboken employers. Your resume should emphasize transferable systems (SAP, Workday, Anaplan) over Samsung-specific process names.

Across all four, the fastest way to get a tailored draft out the door for each posting is to stop editing one master doc and start generating a version per application. That is the exact work Refolk takes off you: paste the posting, get your own resume back rewritten for it, with the cover letter drafted and a fit score that tells you if the role is actually worth the hour.

The three-week window the market is giving you

The October 14 cutoff is a timing gift, not a sentence. Candidates terminated between September 30 and October 14 hit the market after the back-to-school hiring freeze lifts and before the Thanksgiving-to-New-Year pullback, which gives you roughly a three-week high-signal window.

Make the window visible on the page:

  • Add "Available: immediate start" to the resume header. Candidates with 60-day notice periods cannot say this.
  • In the cover letter, state "no non-compete; NJ transfer-of-operations exit." Hiring managers worry about Samsung paper. Kill the worry in sentence one.
  • Set LinkedIn "Open to Work" with the specific titles you want, not "open to opportunities." Vague kills the recruiter search.
The 739 are not laid off. They are relocated-from. Your resume should say so, in the WARN's exact words.

Do not get confused with Samsung SDS America

A separate WARN covers 179 Samsung SDS America employees at Ridgefield Park, effective October 1, 2026. SDS is the IT services affiliate. SEA is sales and marketing. Recruiters searching "Samsung New Jersey layoff" will see both cohorts and conflate them.

Fix this on your resume in two ways:

  • Spell out the legal entity: "Samsung Electronics America, Inc. (SEA)" not just "Samsung."
  • In the one-line company descriptor under your title, say "U.S. sales and marketing subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd." SDS people will write "IT services affiliate." The distinction is the whole point of the next recruiter conversation.

The Reuters-reported ~100 Plano-side cuts matter here too. Even relocators got hit, which means candidates who declined Plano can honestly say "the relocation offer was not a guarantee of continued employment." That line belongs in your talking points, not your resume, but have it ready for the second interview.

The 108x problem, and what to do about it

With 2,596 Samsung-affiliated US professionals and only 24 direct senior CE lateral seats in Refolk's index, roughly 108 Samsung-tagged people are chasing each direct-match role. That ratio forces a cross-industry pivot, and the pivot is where most SEA resumes fail, because they read as "Samsung person looking for another Samsung."

108x
Samsung-affiliated US talent per direct CE lateral seat

2,596 SEA-tagged professionals in Refolk's index against 24 senior Consumer Electronics sales and marketing openings.

Pivot targets by archetype:

  • Retail-channel sales: Whirlpool, LG, TCL North America, Resideo, and the trade-marketing teams at large CPG employers (the muscle transfers).
  • Product and brand marketing: connected-TV ad platforms, DTC appliance brands, and carrier marketing teams at Verizon and T-Mobile.
  • B2B enterprise: digital-signage, MDM, and endpoint-security vendors adjacent to the Knox and Displays book.
  • Corporate ops/legal/finance: NJ-based CPG and pharma reabsorbing the Unilever-vintage talent pool along the Hudson waterfront.

For each target, the resume needs the target company's vocabulary, not Samsung's. "Carrier" at Samsung means Verizon and T-Mobile as sales channels. At a B2B device vendor it means something different. Rewriting that vocabulary posting-by-posting is tedious, which is why Refolk tailors each application to the specific job posting instead of making you keep a dozen master versions.

The one page you need by Friday

Build a single resume this week with these specific elements, in this order:

  1. Header: name, metro (not street), phone, email, "Available: immediate start."
  2. Headline: your target title, not your Samsung title. "Director, National Retail Accounts (Consumer Electronics / Appliances)" beats "Director of Sales, Lowe's at Samsung."
  3. Current role end date: Oct 2026, with "(SEA headquarters transfer to Plano, TX; declined relocation)" in italics.
  4. Three bullets per role, numbers first. Dollars, units, points of share, cycle length. No adjectives.
  5. Named retailers, named carriers, named platforms. Lowe's, Best Buy, Costco, Verizon, T-Mobile. These are the strings recruiters search.
  6. One line of skills, grouped: retail account management, JBP, trade marketing, lifecycle, SAP, Anaplan, Salesforce.

Then stop editing the master. For every posting worth applying to, tailor it to the posting's own vocabulary, so the Lowe's version looks like a Lowe's resume and the TCL version looks like a TCL resume, without you keeping track of twelve files.

October 14 is the cutoff on paper. The market cutoff is roughly mid-November, when corporate hiring quietly pauses for the holidays. You have about four working weeks of real signal. Spend them on the right postings, in the right vocabulary, with the WARN language doing the stigma work for you.

FAQ

Should I say "laid off" or "declined relocation" on LinkedIn?

Say "declined relocation" and name the HQ move. The WARN's "transfer of operations" language is public, verifiable in a background check, and does not carry the Q4 2026 layoff stigma. "Laid off" invites a performance assumption no recruiter will ask about but many will quietly weight. Keep the detailed narrative off the public feed until your severance release is signed, because NJ severance terms often include non-disparagement.

Is my non-compete still enforceable if Samsung moved the HQ?

Treat this as a lawyer question, not a resume question, and get an NJ employment attorney to read your specific agreement before you tell a recruiter you are free of restrictions. In general, New Jersey courts scrutinize non-competes tied to a position the employer eliminated, and "transfer of operations" is a different fact pattern than a for-cause exit, but your mileage depends on the contract.

Which non-Samsung employers should I target first?

Start with the companies that already poach Samsung sales and marketing talent: TCL North America, LG, Whirlpool, Resideo, Verizon, T-Mobile, Best Buy corporate, and the Hudson waterfront CPG and pharma employers that absorbed Unilever's NJ exits. Direct CE lateral seats are thin (24 senior roles in Refolk's index), so the cross-industry pivot is not optional.

How is the SEA cohort different from the Samsung SDS 179?

SEA is sales and marketing for Samsung's U.S. consumer business: phones, TVs, displays, appliances. Samsung SDS America is the IT services affiliate, and its 179-person WARN at Ridgefield Park takes effect October 1, 2026. Recruiters searching "Samsung New Jersey" will see both. Spell out "Samsung Electronics America, Inc." on your resume and in your LinkedIn headline so the two cohorts do not get conflated.
