PepsiCo Cut 143 in Cheverly, Kept the Trucks: The Route Sales Rewrite

PepsiCo laid off 143 Cheverly workers same-day but kept sales and delivery running. Here is the resume rewrite that lands the trucks still on the road.

On September 14, 2026, PepsiCo shut manufacturing and warehouse at its 60-year-old Cheverly, Maryland plant with same-day notice, cutting all 143 workers (98 of them Teamsters Local 639) while telling local officials that sales and delivery operations at 2611 Pepsi Place would continue without disruption. Pay and benefits run through November 13. That is the window to rewrite a plant-floor resume into one that lands the trucks PepsiCo, Reyes, and Coca-Cola Consolidated are still filling up every morning.

This is not a "grieve and wait" post. The grievance matters (Maryland's Mini-WARN carries $10,000 a day in civil penalties), but the paycheck after November 13 comes from a resume that reads for the front seat of a truck, not the back of a bottling line.

What actually got cut, and what did not

PepsiCo eliminated fleet, transport, manufacturing, and warehouse roles at Cheverly, but kept sales and delivery running at the same address. That split is the entire map for where to apply first.

  • Cut: 143 total positions, including fleet, transport, manufacturing, and warehouse roles at 2611 Pepsi Place near the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
  • Union share: 98 of the 143 are Teamsters Local 639 members.
  • Kept: Sales and delivery operations at the same site, per PepsiCo's notification to Cheverly officials.
  • Precedent: PepsiCo used the identical split at its Mack Avenue plant in Detroit on September 27, 2025, eliminating 83 manufacturing, maintenance, and transport jobs while warehouse, fleet, sales, and technician teams kept running.
  • Bigger pattern: Roughly 1,600 PepsiCo positions across seven-plus states have been cut since late 2024, following a 3% drop in North American beverage sales volume and the October 2024 closure of four bottling plants in Chicago, Cincinnati, Harrisburg, and Atlanta.

The takeaway is blunt. This is not PepsiCo leaving the DC/Baltimore corridor. It is PepsiCo keeping the customer-facing half of the business and centralizing the plant-floor half. The jobs still exist. The org chart changed.

The internal bid nobody is sending first

The single most valuable resume most Cheverly workers can send is an internal PepsiCo Beverages bid packet, not an outside application, because the Teamsters Local 639 contract may provide affected employees with bidding rights for available positions.

Bidding rights are the clause that turns a laid-off warehouse job code into a shot at a route-sales or delivery seat that would otherwise post externally. Two rules of thumb:

  1. Do not sign a broad release without union counsel review. Same-day notice for 98 union members at a site well above Maryland's Mini-WARN threshold (15 employees or 25% of workforce) is a live grievance. Back-pay for the missed 60 days is on the table. A general release can extinguish it.
  2. File the internal bid the same week you file for unemployment. Frito-Lay, which is PepsiCo-owned, shows up four times in the top employer list for route sales in Refolk's index. Internal transfer preserves years of service and pension credit. External applications do not.

If the bid packet needs to translate "warehouse selector, second shift, palletized loading, cycle counts, DOT pre-trip" into "Route Sales Representative candidate with CDL Class A, 40+ stops/day capable, HOS-compliant," that translation is the exact work Refolk takes off you: paste the internal posting, get your own history rewritten against it, and see a fit score before you submit.

The route-sales market is 80x bigger than beverages

Route sales as a market is roughly 80 times larger outside food and beverage than inside it, which means a resume that only lists "bottling plant" shrinks the addressable market by about 99%.

Only 1.2% of them sit inside legacy food/beverage employers, which is where most laid-off Cheverly resumes stop looking.

The resume implication is direct. If the top of your resume says "Bottling Plant Operator, PepsiCo Cheverly, 2004 - 2026," recruiters at FedEx Ground, Sysco, US Foods, UPS, and Reyes read "manufacturing" and stop. If it says "Route-Ready CDL Class A Driver, 22 years DOT-compliant, palletized loading, 200+ daily customer touchpoints in DC/Baltimore corridor," the same recruiters read "operator we can put on a truck Monday."

The named target list for the next 60 days

The Cheverly worker's target list is not "search Indeed for driver jobs." It is a specific bench of beverage distributors, food-service haulers, and last-mile logistics operators who hire CDL Teamsters routinely.

  • Reyes Beverage Group / Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling: Largest independent U.S. beer distributor and a major DC/Baltimore-corridor Coca-Cola bottler. Direct competitor for route sales.
  • Coca-Cola Consolidated: Natural cross-industry target for anyone with Pepsi bottling background.
  • Georgia Crown Distributing, Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, RNDC, Johnson Brothers: Top four food/beverage route-sales employers surfaced in Refolk's industry-filtered pull. All hire CDL Teamsters.
  • Frito-Lay (PepsiCo-owned): The internal transfer lane. Four of the top ten route-sales employer mentions in the index.
  • Bimbo Bakeries USA: Direct-store-delivery model that overlaps almost 1:1 with beverage route work.

Rewriting the plant-floor resume line by line

The rewrite works because route sales pays for two things a bottling plant worker already does every day: moving product without shrinkage, and being the human the customer sees. Say that in numbers, not duties.

Kill the duty list, keep the yield

Do not write "Operated bottling line and performed quality checks." Write:

  • "Ran Line 3 filler at 94% OEE across 18 months, 0 recordable incidents, 220,000 cases/month throughput."
  • "Held shrinkage under 0.4% on 12M+ cases annually as inventory lead."
  • "Trained 14 new hires on DOT pre-trip and palletized loading; zero rollback failures in audit."

Numbers travel across industries. Duties do not.

Foreground CDL, DOT, and hours-of-service before anything else

The top of the resume for a route-sales pivot is not a "Summary." It is a five-line credentials block:

  1. CDL Class (A or B), state, expiration, endorsements (H, N, T, X where applicable).
  2. DOT medical card expiration.
  3. Hours-of-service clean record, years.
  4. Forklift and pallet-jack certification with issue date.
  5. Territory knowledge (DC, PG County, Anne Arundel, Baltimore City), years driving it.

That block is what an ATS filter and a human recruiter both look for first. Bury it under a paragraph and it does not get read.

Translate the union role into customer language

Route sales is a sales job with a truck attached. It is not a driving job. Recruiters need to see customer language:

  • Not "Delivered product to accounts." Yes "Managed 42-stop daily route across 180 accounts, upsold cold-vault placements averaging $340/account/week in incremental sell-in."
  • Not "Handled returns and stales." Yes "Processed returns at 1.1% of ship volume, well under 2% company target; documented rotation compliance on every stop."
  • Not "Worked with store managers." Yes "Owned account relationships at 27 grocery and 15 c-store accounts; retained 100% of assigned book across 3 years."

If those numbers do not exist in your head yet, they exist in your pay stubs, your route sheets, and your quarterly reviews. Pull them out.

Route sales is a sales job with a truck attached. Recruiters need to see accounts, cases, and cold vault, not shifts and stations.

The Mini-WARN math and why you apply anyway

Maryland's Mini-WARN Act requires employers with 50 or more workers to give 60 days' notice of layoffs affecting the greater of 25% of the workforce or 15 employees, and the final regulations effective October 13, 2025 carry civil penalties of up to $10,000 per day for noncompliance. That is a live claim, and it does not change the November 13 pay cliff.

The practical order:

  1. Apply now. Do not wait for the grievance to resolve. The job market for CDL route sales in DC/Baltimore is tight but not infinite, and the ~100 Maryland WARN filings covering roughly 6,700 workers in 2026 means you are not the only person sending resumes this quarter.
  2. File the union grievance in parallel. Local 639 has done this before. Let them handle it.
  3. Keep every document PepsiCo hands you. Separation letter, benefits continuation, any severance offer, the exact date and time you were notified. That paper is the case.
  4. Do not sign a release for severance without union counsel review. A same-day notice for 98 union members is not a routine layoff.

The reason to apply hard right now: bidding rights and grievance back-pay both take weeks or months. The rent does not.

The scarce-hire framing most Cheverly workers miss

A 15-year PepsiCo route veteran in the DC/Baltimore corridor is a scarce hire, not a commodity, and the resume should read that way.

Refolk's industry-filtered pull surfaces only about 1,613 route/delivery professionals across all U.S. food/beverage/trucking distributors, with heavy clustering at four employers (Southern Glazer's, RNDC, Johnson Brothers, Georgia Crown). Cheverly workers with a decade-plus of corridor knowledge are directly relevant to Reyes Beverage Group, Coca-Cola Consolidated, beer distributors, wine and spirits houses, and food-service haulers who each need people who already know which loading dock at which Giant Food takes which pallet configuration.

That scarcity should drive the framing. Lead with:

  • Years on the specific corridor and named account types.
  • Yield metrics (case count, account count, shrinkage %, on-time %).
  • Safety record in years without a recordable.
  • Union work history as a positive signal of reliability, not something to hide.

For any specific posting, the tailoring is the same three-step move: read the job description, identify the two or three yield metrics they name (stops/day, cases/day, retention %), and put those exact numbers from your own history at the top of the resume. That per-posting tailoring is what Refolk does automatically. Paste the Reyes or Coca-Cola Consolidated posting, get your own resume back rewritten to hit the metrics that posting asks for, with a fit score that tells you whether it is worth the application at all.

FAQ

Can PepsiCo really lay us off same-day in Maryland?

Not without exposure. Maryland's Mini-WARN Act, with final regulations effective October 13, 2025, requires 60 days' notice for employers of 50 or more when a layoff hits the greater of 15 employees or 25% of the workforce, and it carries civil penalties of up to $10,000 per day for noncompliance. Cheverly's 143-worker cut clears that threshold easily. Whether the company qualifies for an exception is a legal question for Local 639's counsel, but same-day notice at that scale is exactly what the statute was written to penalize.

Should I apply to Frito-Lay if I got laid off from PepsiCo Beverages?

Yes, and it should be one of the first applications you send. Frito-Lay is PepsiCo-owned and appears four times in the top-ten route-sales employer list in Refolk's index. Internal transfer through the Teamsters bidding process, where the contract allows it, preserves years of service and pension credit that external applications do not. Send the internal bid the same week you file for unemployment.

What if I have never done sales, just plant work?

Route sales pays for two things you already do: moving product without shrinkage, and being the person the customer sees at the dock. If you have ever trained a new hire, held a shrinkage number, run a forklift audit without a finding, or covered a route for someone out sick, you have the material. The rewrite is about pulling the numbers from your route sheets and pay records and putting them at the top of the resume in the language the posting uses.

How wide should I cast the net beyond beverages?

Wide. Route sales, delivery driver, and route driver titles in Refolk's index total roughly 134,800 nationally, but only about 1.2% sit inside food/beverage/trucking employers. Bimbo Bakeries, FedEx Ground, UPS, DoorDash, Uber, and last-mile logistics operators all hire CDL drivers with palletized-loading experience. Limiting to beverage competitors alone shrinks your addressable market by 99%.
