Nike's "Pace" Cut: Rewrite Your Resume Before the 2027 WARN

Nike's Oct. 1 Pace memo named no number. Here's how to rewrite your resume before 1,400+ Beaverton peers flood LinkedIn in 2027.

On Oct. 1, 2026, Elliott Hill told Nike staff a restructuring program called "Pace" will mean "fewer roles across Nike over time," with decisions landing in calendar year 2027 and beyond. He gave no number, no locations, no org chart. That ambiguity window, between the memo and the WARN notice, is the only edge a Nike employee has before every other Beaverton badge hits LinkedIn with the same headline.

What Elliott Hill actually said, and what he didn't

Hill confirmed cuts are coming but refused to quantify them, which is the signal to start writing your resume now rather than in January. His exact line: "This work will result in fewer roles across Nike over time. We don't yet know the number of roles or the specific locations of positions, so any reports about specific figures are speculative. Decisions about impacted roles will begin in calendar year 2027 and beyond."

Here is what the Oct. 1 announcement did tell us, pulled from the memo and the Q1 call:

  • Pace is the official program name, targeting $2.5 billion in savings through FY2031.
  • Nike expects to book roughly $300 million in restructuring charges this fiscal year.
  • The company is collapsing four geographic regions into three: Americas, Asia Pacific and Greater China, and EMEA.
  • A new campus is opening in India, described as having "strong capabilities and access to talent."
  • Q1 sales came in at $11.2 billion (below expectations), EPS at 48 cents, and shares hit a 13-year low.
  • China revenue fell 26% on a constant-currency basis.
  • This is the third 2026 cut. In April, roughly 1,400 people in global operations were let go.

Hill is a 32-year Nike veteran who started as an intern in 1988 and came back as CEO in October 2024. If loyalty insulated anyone, it would insulate the people he grew up with. It doesn't. The Pace memo is the loudest "update your resume" alarm Nike has ever rung, and it rang without a date on it.

Why the "wait for the WARN notice" instinct is the trap

Waiting for the WARN filing feels responsible and is the single worst move a Nike employee can make right now, because the internal re-org that decides your fate is finalized months before HR calls you. The notification date is a legal formality; the headcount decision is a Q4 2026 whiteboard exercise.

The mechanism matters. Restructuring programs the size of Pace work backward from a savings number ($2.5B) and a regional map (four regions down to three). Finance and the new regional presidents will finalize headcount targets per org this quarter. By the time the WARN letter lands in 2027, your replacement team is already named, the new reporting lines are drawn, and the people who moved early are already in offers at Lululemon, On Running, or Hoka.

Forbes made the same point from a different angle: organizational psychologists find prolonged layoff uncertainty causes emotional exhaustion, lower engagement, and higher intent-to-leave even among survivors. Translation: even if you keep your job in 2027, your 2026 resume still needs to be ready, because the people who kept their jobs are leaving on their own.

The WARN letter is a legal formality. The headcount decision is a Q4 whiteboard exercise.

The math on ex-Nike oversupply

In Refolk's index, roughly 91,700 US profiles carry Nike in their headline or history, and they compete against a direct peer pool of about 271,800 US product managers, designers, merchandisers, and marketing managers. That is the scale of the shelf you are about to walk onto.

The ceiling of ex-Nike resumes recruiters could see land in 2027 if Pace hits broadly.

The numbers below are the ones that should set your calendar, not the Pace press release.

One in three resumes in the apparel/merch/PM funnel next year will have a Nike line on it. If yours reads like every other Nike resume - "cross-functional," "consumer-obsessed," "athlete-focused" - you lose on the diff, not the pedigree.

Which Nike roles are most exposed

The India campus and the four-to-three regional collapse are the two tells, and together they point at US-based ops, analytics, digital, and EMEA/APAC merchandising as the exposed layer. Hill said India has "strong capabilities and access to talent," which is corporate for "we are lifting and shifting what doesn't need to sit in Beaverton."

The roles that offshore cleanly, and should assume the most exposure:

  1. Ops and supply chain analytics sitting at WHQ.
  2. Digital product and platform teams whose work is specced in Beaverton and built elsewhere.
  3. EMEA and APAC merchandising coordinators whose regions just got merged.
  4. Finance and FP&A at the regional seam.
  5. HR business partners aligned to the collapsed regions.

The roles that resist offshoring, and should lead your resume:

  • Athlete-facing and sports marketing roles tied to specific US leagues or athletes.
  • Physical retail design and store experience (DTC, House of Innovation).
  • Product creation roles that require in-person sample reviews with Beaverton labs.
  • Direct-to-consumer merchandising for North America.

If your current title sits in column A, rewrite into the vocabulary of column B wherever your actual work overlapped. "Managed EMEA footwear allocation" becomes "led in-market product decisions with on-ground retail partners." The point isn't to lie, it's to lead with the muscle that doesn't move to Bangalore.

The Portland arbitrage: don't apply where every other Nike resume applies

Portland is the worst city to target with an ex-Nike resume in 2027, which is counterintuitive because Portland is where you live. Refolk's index shows Portland is the #1 US hub for senior apparel merchandisers, with Nike, adidas N.A., and Columbia all headquartered there. A Nike exit resume aimed at Portland competes with every other Nike exit resume, in the same ATS, for roles that were already thin.

The arbitrage:

  • DFW has comparable merch density and almost no brand overlap with Nike.
  • Denver has a lifestyle-outdoor skew (VF Corp brands like The North Face) that reads well against a Nike pedigree.
  • LA has a dense streetwear cluster and Rothy's regional presence.

Rewriting for a different city means more than changing the "Location" field. The job descriptions in Denver outdoor and LA streetwear use different verbs than Beaverton. Pasting the posting into Refolk and letting it rewrite your bullets into the language that specific posting uses is the whole point of the exercise, and it is the exact work most Nike applicants will skip because they are still waiting for the WARN notice.

The peer-brand window closes in 6 to 8 weeks

Lululemon, On Running, Hoka (Deckers), New Balance, and VF Corp historically absorb Nike talent after a cut, but the window closes within 6 to 8 weeks of each WARN wave because the supply arrives in a batch. If you move in October 2026, you are a referral. If you move in January 2027 after the WARN hits, you are a stack.

Refolk's index surfaces the realistic landing-spot shortlist for senior apparel/footwear merchandisers right now: adidas, Rothy's, TOMS, Carhartt, Wolverine Worldwide, Red Wing Shoe Co., Lacoste, and The North Face. That is eight named brands actively hiring senior merch, which rounds to a few dozen reqs across all of them. Divide that by the Nike-tagged senior merch cohort and you get an oversupply ratio in the low thousands at the narrow top of the funnel.

The behavioral lesson: apply before the news breaks, not after. A recruiter at On Running who sees three ex-Nike resumes in October has time to interview all three. The same recruiter in February sees 60 and triages on 10 seconds per resume.

What a Nike restructuring resume should actually say

An Elliott Hill restructuring resume reads differently from a stable-economy Nike resume, because the hiring manager on the other side knows exactly what Oct. 1 meant and is scanning for signals that you saw it coming. Three concrete rewrites:

Replace "cross-functional" with the actual functions

"Partnered cross-functionally with design, product creation, and sports marketing" is a Nike cliche by now. Say which product, which athlete, which season, and what the P&L number was. If you worked on the Vaporfly refresh, say so. If you ran the EMEA basketball allocation, name the number of doors and the sell-through.

Mirror or distance from "agile, efficient, athlete-focused" deliberately

Hill framed Pace as making Nike "more agile, efficient and athlete-focused." If you are applying inside Nike for an internal transfer, mirror the vocabulary exactly, because the people reading your profile are using the same words. If you are applying to Hoka or On, distance from it, because those brands' recruiters have spent six months hearing "athlete-focused" from every ex-Nike candidate and it has stopped meaning anything.

Add a 2026 line that reads as pre-emptive, not reactive

Even if you are still employed, add a bullet that shows you were already thinking in the new three-region structure before Oct. 1. "Led Q3 2026 planning across what became the merged EMEA footprint" tells a reader you were in the room when the map was redrawn. That is the single most valuable signal a Nike employee can send in late 2026.

A retail resume rewrite at this scale is tedious, which is why most people won't do it. Pasting the posting into Refolk returns your own resume rewritten against that specific req, with a fit score telling you whether the On Running senior merchandiser role actually matches your allocation history or just looks like it from the title. The cover letter drafts in the same pass.

FAQ

When will Nike actually file WARN notices for Pace?

Hill said decisions begin in "calendar year 2027 and beyond," which under federal WARN law means notices would land 60 days before specific separations. The earliest realistic WARN filings for US sites are therefore late Q1 or early Q2 2027. That gives Nike employees roughly a four-to-six month head start on the public-facing announcement if they begin resume work now.

Is Pace different from the April 2026 layoff?

Yes. The April 2026 cut was a ~1,400-person reduction concentrated in Nike's global operations team, executed and done. Pace is a multi-year reshaping of how the company is organized around three regions and a $2.5 billion cost target, which means role definitions change over several waves rather than a single-day RIF. Internal transfer odds are higher than a typical layoff, but only if your internal profile already uses the new three-region vocabulary.

Should I target Portland or leave the city?

Refolk's index shows Portland is already the densest US hub for senior apparel merchandisers because Nike, adidas N.A., and Columbia all sit there. A Nike exit resume targeting Portland competes with every other Nike exit resume. DFW, Denver, and LA show comparable merchandising density with much less brand overlap, which makes them the geographic arbitrage play for anyone whose life isn't physically anchored to Beaverton.

How do apparel industry layoffs usually play out at peer brands?

Peer brands like Lululemon, On Running, Hoka, and New Balance historically pick up Nike merch and product talent, but the hiring window closes within 6 to 8 weeks of each WARN wave because the ex-Nike supply arrives in a batch. October 2026 movers get interviews. January 2027 movers get triaged into a stack of hundreds of identical "ex-Nike, athlete-focused, cross-functional" profiles.
