Zalando Erfurt's 2,700-Person Shock: The DHL-First CV Rewrite

Zalando closes Erfurt by September 2026. Here is the CV rewrite that beats 2,699 colleagues to DHL, Amazon Gera, and Kaufland roles.

On 8 January 2026 Zalando confirmed it will shut its Erfurt fulfilment centre by the end of September, ending roughly 2,700 jobs in a single Thuringian city. This is not a diffuse restructuring spread across seven countries. It is one quarter, one labour market, and 2,699 colleagues chasing the same nearby Amazon, DHL, Hermes, and Kaufland openings you are.

The CV rewrite here is a triage instrument, not a polish job. What you strip, what you translate out of Zalando's internal vocabulary, and which employer's keyword set you tune for first will decide who lands before the local warehouse market saturates.

Why the Erfurt closure is a timing problem, not a quality problem

The Zalando Erfurt layoffs concentrate roughly one-sixth of Zalando's global workforce into a single Thuringian labour market, which is why the CV race is against the clock more than against other applicants' credentials. Erfurt is Zalando's largest single site and the city's largest private employer. When it goes dark in September 2026, the local absorption capacity does not exist on paper.

  • 2,700 employees affected at the Erfurt fulfilment centre.
  • ~1/6 of Zalando's global workforce concentrated at this one site.
  • 14 fulfilment centres across 7 countries in the post-restructure network.
  • ~250 km from Erfurt to the new Giessen centre offered for internal transfer.
  • Announcement date: 8 January 2026. Closure: end of September 2026.

The mechanism is straightforward. A layoff of this size spread across 14 sites would be swallowed by ordinary labour churn. Dropped into one city, 2,700 CVs equals roughly five times the entire Amazon Erfurt delivery-station headcount hitting the market in a single quarter. First-mover CVs get read. Later ones stack in the queue behind identical Zalando job titles.

Where 2,700 Erfurt CVs actually land

DHL, not Amazon, is the statistical default landing pad for German warehouse workers, so tune your CV to DHL's vocabulary before Amazon's. Public coverage of the Erfurt shock fixates on Amazon Gera because the headline is clean: 1,000+ new roles, 80 km away. The index data tells a different story.

In Refolk's index of professional profiles, there are 5,111 warehouse-associate-titled professionals in Germany, and DHL is the largest current employer for that cohort. The same pattern holds one rung up: 3,831 Schichtleiter-tier logistics professionals, DHL again on top. Amazon is a real absorber. It is not the modal one.

Read the last two rows together. Even if every one of Amazon Gera's 1,000 new roles opened to an Erfurt commuter (they will not; some are already filled locally in Gera), that absorbs only about 37% of the 2,700 affected. The remaining ~1,700 CVs land at DHL Paketzentrum Nohra near Weimar (~20 km), Kaufland regional logistics, Hermes, Otto-Versand, and smaller Thuringian 3PLs. Write for that reality first.

The three keyword sets, ranked

  1. DHL: Sendungsverfolgung, Paketzentrum, Zustellbasis, Umschlagslager, Kommissionierung nach MHD, Gefahrgutklasse.
  2. Amazon: Stow, Pick, Pack, Rebin, PPH (Picks Per Hour), Kaizen, Andon, FC (Fulfillment Center), inbound/outbound dock.
  3. Kaufland / Lidl Stiftung: Frischelogistik, Trockensortiment, Kommissionierung mit MDE-Gerät, Staplerschein (Klasse 3).

If your Zalando job history reads in Zalando's internal vocabulary (their process names, their internal system acronyms, their zone codes), you need to rewrite each bullet three times, once per keyword set above, and submit the matching version to the matching employer. That per-posting rewrite is the exact work Refolk takes off you: paste the job listing, get your own resume back rewritten for it, with the vocabulary already swapped in.

The two-track CV: Lagermitarbeiter vs Schichtleiter

Shift leads face a 33% thinner competitor pool than pickers, so the two tiers need different CV strategies, not the same template with a different title. This is the single biggest mistake the Erfurt cohort will make in the next six weeks.

The math from Refolk's index: 5,111 Lagermitarbeiter vs 3,831 Schichtleiter in Germany, a 1.33-to-1 ratio. When 2,700 Zalando CVs hit the market split roughly along the same distribution, the picker tier is competing inside a national pool 33% denser than the shift-lead tier.

Track A: If you were a Lagermitarbeiter, Kommissionierer, or Packer

  • Lead with throughput numbers, not tenure. "180 Picks/Stunde im MFC-Zone C" beats "3 years at Zalando Erfurt."
  • Translate Zalando's zone codes into generic terms. Nobody at DHL knows what "MFC-Zone C" means. "Fashion sorter, mid-height rack, RF scanner" reads on any ATS.
  • List your Staplerschein class explicitly, with the issuance date and the renewal date. Kaufland's ATS filters on it.
  • Drop soft skills entirely. In a 5,111-person pool, "teamfähig" adds nothing.

Track B: If you were a Schichtleiter, Teamleiter, or Vorarbeiter

  • Lead with headcount managed and shift KPIs. "Führte 42 MA über Nachtschicht, Zielquote 98.4% Pickgenauigkeit" is the top line.
  • Name the systems: SAP EWM, Manhattan WMS, Körber (formerly HighJump), paired with a generic label.
  • Include Verdi and works-council roles honestly if you held one. DHL is unionised; this reads as a plus, not a red flag. It may read differently at Amazon, so save it for the DHL version.
  • Mention Sozialplan negotiation experience only if you were actually across the table. It is a real skill.

The Giessen transfer trap

Accepting the internal transfer to Zalando's new Giessen fulfilment centre in Hesse (~250 km from Erfurt) collapses your external CV options and reduces your Sozialplan severance leverage, so treat it as a last resort, not a safety net. Zalando is offering Giessen as the "modern centre" alternative in its 14-site, seven-country post-restructure network.

Two things to know before you sign.

  1. The distance is real. 250 km is not a commute. It is a household move, and Hesse rents are materially higher than Erfurt's. Model the take-home before, not after.
  2. The Sozialplan clock. Verdi and the works council have entered a conciliation process with Zalando covering severance and relocation, but conciliation is not resolution. Your CV should be prepped, tested against DHL and Amazon Gera postings, and returning callbacks before you have to answer Zalando's transfer offer.
Accept Giessen after your DHL Nohra callback comes in, not before.

If callbacks are coming in, you have real leverage in the Sozialplan negotiation. If they are not, you accept the transfer knowing exactly what you are giving up.

The cover letter frame that survives the profit headline

Do not frame yourself as a victim of a struggling employer, because Amazon and DHL recruiters read the same news you do and they know Zalando is profitable. Zalando reported a 16.8% sales increase to €12.35 billion and €215.1 million net profit in the 2025 financial year. The Erfurt closure is a post-merger redundancy tied to About You integration overlap, not a distress signal.

€215.1M
Zalando's 2025 net profit, on 16.8% sales growth

Recruiters know this. Frame the closure as About You integration overlap, not distress.

The correct one-line frame in your Anschreiben:

"Following the About You integration, Zalando is consolidating parallel fulfilment capacity; my role at the Erfurt site ends 30 September 2026."

That reads as neutral. It signals you know why the closure happened, you are not bitter, and you are available on a specific date. A recruiter can copy that sentence into their internal notes without editing. That is what you want.

For workers who have never written a cover letter in the years they were at Zalando Erfurt, drafting one from scratch under time pressure is the hardest part of the whole process. Refolk drafts the cover letter alongside the tailored CV, using the same job-history data, so you are not staring at a blank page at 22:00 after a shift.

The 30-day sequence that ships before the market saturates

Rewrite in week one, submit in week two, follow up in week three, and use week four to widen radius if callbacks have not come. That order matters because Amazon Gera, DHL Nohra, and Kaufland regional DCs will slow-walk applications once volume from Erfurt visibly spikes.

  1. Days 1 to 7: Build the master CV in generic logistics vocabulary. Strip every Zalando internal system name unless paired with the generic equivalent. Get your Staplerschein, Gefahrgut, and first-aid certificate scans into one folder.
  2. Days 8 to 14: Apply to DHL Paketzentrum Nohra (~20 km), Amazon ILZ Erfurt (Mainzerhofstraße), Kaufland regional DCs, and Hermes Erfurt-area depots. Tailor per posting, do not send the master.
  3. Days 15 to 21: Amazon Gera FC (~80 km), Otto-Versand regional roles, and 3PLs on the A71 corridor. This is where a per-posting rewrite matters most, because Amazon's ATS scores keyword density and Gera will get flooded.
  4. Days 22 to 30: Widen to Leipzig (~100 km) and Halle if callbacks are thin. Reassess the Giessen offer only now.

Tailoring 20-plus applications by hand across three keyword sets is a full week of work you do not have. That is where Refolk earns its keep: it scores how well your history actually fits each posting before you send, so you skip the ones you would ghost on anyway and put real effort into the ones that will land.

FAQ

How fast will the Erfurt warehouse market saturate after the September 2026 closure?

The local market is already tight. LinkedIn shows roughly 537 warehouse-associate openings in the Erfurt area and about 103 Amazon-specific openings as of mid-2026. Against 2,700 outgoing Zalando staff, that ratio is roughly one opening per five affected workers, which is why the CVs submitted in weeks one and two of the timeline land and the ones submitted in month three often do not. The saturation curve steepens once Verdi's conciliation with Zalando concludes and severance payouts hit accounts, because that is when applications spike.

Should I take the Zalando Giessen transfer offer?

Only after you have callbacks in hand from DHL Nohra, Amazon Gera, or Kaufland. Giessen is 250 km away in Hesse, which is a household move, not a commute, and accepting it reduces your Sozialplan severance leverage under German social-plan rules. Use the external offers as your negotiating floor. If nothing lands by mid-August 2026, Giessen becomes a real option, but it should not be your first move.

Do I put "Zalando" front and centre on the CV, or downplay it?

Put it front and centre with the closure context in one neutral line. Recruiters at Amazon, DHL, and Kaufland already know about the Erfurt shutdown and will assume you were affected the moment they see Zalando Erfurt on the CV. Being explicit ("Erfurt fulfilment centre, closing 30 September 2026 as part of post-About-You integration") answers the question before they ask it and signals you are available on a known date, which is a hiring advantage against candidates with vague timelines.

Is a shift-lead CV really different from a picker CV, or is that overthinking it?

It is materially different, and treating them as the same template is the most common mistake in this cohort. The picker pool in Germany is 5,111 deep in Refolk's index; the shift-lead pool is 3,831, a 33% smaller competitor field. Shift-lead CVs should lead with headcount managed, KPI ownership, and WMS system names (SAP EWM, Manhattan, Körber). Picker CVs should lead with throughput numbers and Staplerschein class. Same person, same history, two different documents.
