The 40+ Workday Resume Rewrite for HiredScore's Sub-Hour Reject

Mobley v. Workday's Sept 14, 2026 class cert deadline won't save you. Here's the 40+ resume rewrite that starves Workday's HiredScore of age signals.

If you are over 40 and your Workday applications come back rejected inside an hour, you are not paranoid. You are inside the exact pattern that got Mobley v. Workday conditionally certified, and the class certification motion is due September 14, 2026 in the Northern District of California. The opt-in window for that collective closed March 7, 2026, so the resume you send tomorrow has to defend itself.

Why the Sept 14 deadline matters even though you can't join the case

The September 14, 2026 class certification motion in Mobley v. Workday is the moment a private complaint becomes a court-recognized pattern, but it does nothing for the resume you submit next week. Judge Rita F. Lin set the class cert motion for September 14, 2026 with the hearing on March 9, 2027 at 10:00 a.m. The proposed collective covers "all individuals aged 40 and over who, from September 24, 2020, through the present, applied for job opportunities using Workday, Inc.'s job application platform and were denied employment recommendations."

The catch: the opt-in window closed March 7, 2026. If you are 40+ and applying today, Mobley is legal theater you watch, not a lifeboat you climb into. Meanwhile Workday is used by over 11,000 organizations worldwide, so every "black hole" application you send is still going through the same scoring surface the plaintiffs are suing over.

Lead plaintiff Derek Mobley was rejected from over 100 Workday-powered positions, often with rejection emails sent outside business hours and within an hour of submission. That timestamp pattern is the fingerprint. Your job is to not leave the prints that trigger it.

Every rewrite you make to your Workday resume scales across thousands of employers on the same scoring stack.

The five resume signals Workday's model reads as "over 40"

The features that flag age on a Workday ATS resume are not your name or your photo. They are tenure math, dated vocabulary, exec-tier title density, graduation years, and legacy email domains. Any one of them lets the model rank you against a cohort where you are the outlier. All five together are why sub-hour rejections happen.

Strip these signals in the order that matters most:

  1. Start dates older than 15 years. A "1998" anywhere on the page collapses into an approximate birth year. Jobscan recommends focusing on the last 5 to 7 years and going no further back than 7 to 10 total.
  2. Graduation years. CNBC's guidance is blunt: including your grad year "gives the employer a sense of your age, which can actually hinder your chances of getting hired as you approach 50." Remove between ages 40 and 50.
  3. Exec-tier titles when a Senior title fits. VP and Director titles put you in a tiny pool where 40+ is the anomaly, not the norm. More on this below.
  4. Legacy email domains. AARP explicitly flags @aol.com and @yahoo.com. Move to a plain firstname.lastname@gmail.com or a custom domain.
  5. Phrase archaeology. "Rolodex," "PowerBuilder," "Lotus Notes admin," "webmaster," even "detail-oriented team player" reads as decade-of-origin vocabulary. Rewrite to current stack language for the posting.

Doing this by hand for every Workday portal application is the slow part. Pasting the posting into Refolk and getting back a version of your own resume rewritten against that specific req is the same work, minus the four hours per application.

The "Senior" ceiling is a feature, not a defeat

Down-titling from Director or VP to Senior on a Workday-bound resume is the single highest-leverage move a 40+ engineer can make, because the pool of comparable positive examples is roughly 8 times larger. Machine learning ranking models match candidates to their nearest neighbors in feature space. Being the oldest resume in a cohort of 22,000 Directors is anomalous. Being one of 181,000 Seniors is not.

Here is the shape of the U.S. talent pool, from Refolk's index of professional profiles:

SegmentU.S. countTop current employersNote
Senior Software Engineer181,353Google, Datadog, Adobe, JustworksThe "safe" pool
Principal / Staff Engineer50,076Confluent, Apple, NVIDIA, Shopify, Cloudflare, Amazon3.6x smaller
Director / VP of Engineering21,575Figma, Splice, Palo Alto Networks8.4x smaller

The 8.41x ratio between Senior and Director/VP is the number to remember. Present as a Director with 22 years of experience and you compete in a pool of 21,575 where the tenure distribution flags you. Present as a Senior Software Engineer with the last seven years of your work and you disappear into 181,353 comparable resumes where age-correlated features stop mattering.

Being the oldest resume in a cohort of 22,000 Directors is anomalous. Being one of 181,000 Seniors is not.

This is uncomfortable advice. It asks a 45-year-old VP of Engineering to apply as a Senior IC for a role they could run in their sleep. Read the tradeoff honestly: a "Senior" title on the resume does not stop you from negotiating a Staff or Principal offer once a human is in the loop. It just gets you past the sub-hour reject.

How to spot when HiredScore is actively grading you

If the Workday careers page you are applying through has "hiredscore" in the URL, page source, or the confirmation email footer, assume an AI scoring layer is ranking you before any recruiter opens the file. On July 7, 2025, the court explicitly extended the Mobley collective to applicants processed using HiredScore AI features and required Workday to identify customers using them. HiredScore is the specific scoring product the case names.

What to do when you spot it:

  • Prioritize keyword density over narrative. HiredScore is scoring feature overlap with the job description, not appreciating your career arc. Copy the exact stack names, methodology names, and certifications from the posting into your resume where they truthfully apply.
  • Screenshot the rejection timestamp. Sub-hour and after-hours rejections are the exact evidence pattern that got Mobley conditional cert. You cannot join that collective, but the record you build now matters if a Swanson v. IBM style employer-facing case reaches your industry.
  • Do not upload a "master resume" and let Workday parse it. Workday's parser will keep your 1999 first job, your 2001 grad year, and your Lotus Notes bullet. Upload a version already trimmed to the last 10 years, with graduation years removed.
  • Match your LinkedIn to the trimmed resume. Companies, titles, and dates should match. If the two are disparate, the human reviewer (if you get one) may assume you are lying. Collapse pre-2015 roles on LinkedIn into a single "Earlier Career" block that mirrors the resume.

Getting the keyword density right for each posting without rewriting from scratch is the job Refolk was built to do: paste the Workday req URL, get your own resume back rewritten for it, plus a fit score that tells you whether it is worth applying at all.

The tenure math trap graduation dates only hint at

Removing your graduation year is table stakes. The deeper age tell is a work history that starts in 1998, because Workday's parser converts every start date into a years-of-experience feature. AARP's "age-proofing" advice concentrates on the past 10 years for exactly this reason. The rewrite rule for a Workday-bound resume: no job entry with a start date more than 15 years old, ever.

The mechanics of the trim:

  • Last 10 years, full detail. Company, title, dates by month, four to six bullets each.
  • Years 10 to 15, compressed. Company and title only, or two-line summary.
  • Everything before that, gone or bucketed. One line: "Additional experience at [Company], [Company], [Company] available on request." Jobscan's guidance for 15+ year tenures at a single employer is to go back only 10 years and add that "additional experience available" line.
  • No dates on the education section. Degree, school, honors. Nothing else.
  • No "20+ years of experience" in the summary. Replace with a capability statement tied to the posting.

Resume Now's 2024 survey, cited by Fortune in its coverage of Mobley v. Workday.

The compression is not dishonest. The Workday portal will ask you for full employment history on the application form itself, where a human can weigh it. The resume PDF's job is to survive the automated pass. Those are two different documents doing two different jobs.

The second front: Swanson v. IBM and Eightfold

Mobley v. Workday targets the vendor, but Swanson v. IBM (filed May 2026, W.D. Tex.) targets the employer's own use of AI, and a January 2026 class action against Eightfold AI alleges Fair Credit Reporting Act violations for scoring applicants from unverified third-party sources without consent. The legal theory is spreading, which means the resume defense you build for Workday portals now generalizes.

A quick scan of the exposure:

CaseFiledTargetTheory
Mobley v. WorkdayCert motion Sept 14, 2026Vendor (Workday)ADEA disparate impact via AI screen
Eightfold AI class actionJan 2026Vendor (Eightfold)FCRA violations, unverified third-party data
Swanson v. IBMMay 2026Employer (IBM)Employer's own AI use

The takeaway for a job seeker is simple. Any ATS with an AI ranking layer, whether it is HiredScore inside Workday, Eightfold on its own, or an employer's home-grown model, is reading the same age features off your resume. The rewrite that beats Workday beats the others too.

The 30-minute rewrite checklist

The fastest defensible rewrite of a 40+ resume for a Workday portal takes about 30 minutes if you already have a current base document. Work through the list in order and do not skip:

  1. Delete every start date older than 15 years. Bucket those roles into an "Earlier Career" one-liner.
  2. Remove graduation years from the education section.
  3. Swap @aol.com or @yahoo.com for a clean modern domain.
  4. Down-title if you are targeting IC roles: "VP Engineering" becomes the actual Senior IC title on the posting.
  5. Copy stack names, tool names, and methodology names verbatim from the job description into your bullets where they truthfully apply.
  6. Cut phrases like "seasoned," "extensive experience," "20+ years," "veteran."
  7. Match the trimmed resume to LinkedIn. Collapse pre-2015 roles on both.
  8. Save as PDF with a filename that does not include your birth year.
  9. Apply. Screenshot the confirmation timestamp.
  10. If the rejection comes back inside an hour, save it. You are building a record even if you cannot use it in Mobley.

Doing steps 1 through 6 for every single Workday posting is where most 40+ candidates give up and start blasting the same generic PDF. Refolk automates exactly that loop: your own history in, a per-posting resume and cover letter out, plus a fit score so you stop wasting the good hour of your day on jobs you will not clear the screen for.

FAQ

Can I still join the Mobley v. Workday class action?

Generally no. The opt-in window for the age-discrimination collective closed on March 7, 2026, so applicants rejected today have no direct recourse in Mobley. You can still preserve your own evidence (rejection timestamps, screenshots of HiredScore-branded portals) in case a parallel case is filed against a specific employer you applied to. Swanson v. IBM shows that employer-facing theories are actively being tested.

Is down-titling from Director to Senior dishonest?

No, if the target role is a Senior IC role and you can genuinely do the work. Titles are not credentials, they are pool assignments. Presenting as a Senior Software Engineer to apply for a Senior Software Engineer opening puts you in the 181,353-person pool where the ATS has enough positive examples to score you fairly. Once you are in front of a human recruiter, your actual scope and impact come out in conversation and negotiation.

How do I know if a Workday portal is running HiredScore?

Check the URL path, view the page source for the string "hiredscore," and read the footer of your confirmation email. The July 7, 2025 court order required Workday to identify customers using HiredScore AI features, but there is no public list. If you cannot confirm, assume it is running and write for the scored path.

Does removing my graduation year actually work if my first job started in 1998?

Removing the graduation year alone does not work, which is why the rewrite has to trim the work history too. The parser converts your earliest start date into a years-of-experience feature, and a 1998 start telegraphs age just as clearly as a 1994 graduation year. The rule is no work entry older than 15 years, bucketed into an "Earlier Career" line, plus no dates in the education section. Do both, or the trim leaks.
