The 6-Minute AI Interview Is the New Resume Screen on Lever and JazzHR

Lever and JazzHR now run a 6-minute AI interview at application. Here is how AI Screening by VONQ scores you, and how to rank in the dossier.

If you applied to a role on Lever or JazzHR any time after May 2026, the resume you spent hours polishing was probably not what actually screened you. A 6-minute conversational AI interview did, and the recruiter opened a scored dossier before they ever opened your PDF.

Here is what changed, what the machine grades you on, and how to rank inside it.

What actually happens when you hit "Apply" on Lever now

Applying to a Lever or JazzHR job with AI Screening turned on triggers an immediate 6-minute structured interview, chat or voice, that generates a scored candidate dossier the recruiter sees before your resume. The resume has been demoted to a supporting document.

Employ (the parent of Lever and JazzHR) and VONQ announced the native integration on June 17, 2026. Lever went live in early May 2026; JazzHR followed the same day as the announcement. It is toggled on per job, so not every posting uses it, but Employ's customer base spans tens of thousands of companies and adoption is spreading fast.

The flow, per VONQ's product docs and the ERE walkthrough:

  1. You submit your CV to a Lever or JazzHR posting.
  2. An agent from AI Screening by VONQ opens a chat or voice session in the same window.
  3. It asks structured, JD-mapped questions for roughly six minutes.
  4. It scores you across 15+ skill dimensions using CV signal, chat signal, and interview signal.
  5. Within 20 minutes, the recruiter receives a ranked dossier with your transcript, per-competency scores, and an explanation of why you ranked where you did.

VONQ CEO Ritu Mohanka has been explicit that recruiters do not see a raw number. They see "what each person said, how it maps to the actual job description and that role criteria and why they ranked." The dossier is the artifact. Your resume is a footnote.

Why Employ turned this on, in one number

Employ turned on VONQ's screening because their published pilot data shows candidate processing time dropping from three weeks to two hours, time-to-fill improving 2.5x, and funnel drop-offs falling 60 to 75%.

3 weeks → 2 hours

Employ's cited outcome from the June 17, 2026 Lever and JazzHR rollout.

The mechanism behind that speedup matters for applicants. Recruiters were drowning in AI-polished resumes from low-intent applicants - VONQ cites up to 90% abandonment on long traditional applications, and the ones who finish increasingly use ChatGPT to write their materials. The 6-minute interview is the industry's answer: force a live, structured, JD-anchored conversation that a keyword-stuffed CV cannot fake.

That is also why "tailor the resume harder" is no longer sufficient advice. The tailoring still gates you into the interview, because VONQ uses CV signal as one of three inputs, but the interview is where you actually get ranked. A tool like Refolk that rewrites your resume from your own history against the specific posting still matters, because a weak CV drags the composite score even if you nail the voice portion. It just no longer finishes the job on its own.

The recruiter on the other side is new to this too

Almost no recruiter has real experience reading a VONQ-style dossier yet, which means scoring will lean heavily on VONQ's defaults for the first 6 to 12 months. This is the single biggest tactical fact for applicants right now.

In Refolk's index of professional profiles, only 48 recruiters worldwide publicly list Lever or JazzHR as a skill. Compare that to 5,394 US recruiters who list "Applicant Tracking Systems" as a competency, and 109,521 total US recruiters and technical recruiters. Roughly 0.9% of the ATS-literate US recruiter pool has any public Lever or JazzHR credential, and effectively none list AI screening experience because the product is months old.

What that means in practice: the recruiter reading your dossier will accept VONQ's ranking with far less second-guessing than a seasoned ATS user would apply to a resume. The top of the ranked list is now the shortlist, effectively by default. Getting there is the whole game.

How the dossier actually scores you

AI Screening by VONQ scores every applicant across 15+ skill dimensions mapped to the job description, using three signals: your CV, your text answers, and your voice interview if you chose that mode. Third-party auditor Warden AI audits the agents for bias and compliance.

The non-obvious part: because the dossier is explainable, it rewards a specific kind of answer. It is looking for named competencies with concrete evidence. Eloquence does not help. Length does not help. Structure and specificity do.

Practical rules that map to how the model scores:

  • Name the competency out loud. If the JD says "stakeholder management" or "SQL," use the phrase in your answer, not a synonym. The dossier maps your language to JD language literally.
  • One example per answer, in STAR shape. Situation, Task, Action, Result. The rubric rewards structured recall over improvisation.
  • Quantify the result. "Cut onboarding from 14 days to 3" beats "improved onboarding," because the dossier surfaces quantified claims verbatim to the recruiter.
  • Answer the question that was asked. The agent is not impressed by pivots. Off-topic answers score low on the mapped competency even if they are interesting.
  • Do not pad. Six minutes across roughly 5 to 7 questions means about 45 to 70 seconds per answer. Anything longer gets cut off or dilutes the signal.

The transcript is what the recruiter reads. Your job is to produce quotable lines that the recruiter can lift into a hiring-manager email. If you did not say the words, they cannot lift them.

The ChatGPT-during-the-interview trap

Do not paste ChatGPT answers into the VONQ chat. VONQ has confirmed it is building AI-generated-content detection across the CV, chat responses, and voice transcript, and flags likely bot answers directly in the dossier the recruiter reads.

The tell is not vocabulary. It is the absence of a specific number, a real name, or a real date.

This is the inversion job seekers have not adjusted to yet. Using AI to prepare - rewrite your resume, rehearse answers, generate practice questions - is fine and expected. Using AI to answer live is now an active liability. VONQ puts detection front and center in its marketing precisely because employers need to trust the dossier.

Preparation that pays off, in order:

  1. Pull the exact JD text and list the competencies it names.
  2. Draft one concrete story per competency, 60 seconds, quantified, STAR.
  3. Rehearse those stories out loud once. Not scripted, just familiar.
  4. Have your CV, the JD, and your story bullets on screen when you apply.

The resume side of that prep is the exact work Refolk takes off you: paste the posting, get your own resume back rewritten to name the competencies the VONQ agent will ask about, plus a fit score that flags gaps to prepare stories for. That is the version of the CV the dossier reads as its first signal.

Chat or voice: pick chat if English is your second language

If the agent offers a choice, non-native English speakers should choose the chat format. VONQ supports 50 languages for text screening but only 15 for voice, and voice agents score delivery signals like pacing and hesitation that can penalize accent-adjacent patterns.

Brandon Hall Group's analyst, watching a live VONQ demo, described the agent handling a Dutch-language role where the candidate said he did not speak Dutch. The agent adapted mid-interview. That flexibility is real, but it does not extend to accent scoring in the 15 supported voice languages: if you interview in English by voice and English is your fourth language, the pacing signal is not on your side.

Chat also lets you re-read the question, which matters more than people admit. The 6-minute clock is generous in chat and tight on voice.

The 20-slot cutoff nobody is telling applicants about

Under Employ and VONQ's CPA+ commercial model, employers pay per pre-screened candidate and receive up to 20 ranked dossiers per role. That means applying within the first 48 hours of a Lever or JazzHR posting now materially affects whether you get scored at all.

CPA+ (Cost-Per-Application Plus) launched June 24, 2025 as, in VONQ's words, the world's first agentic AI cost-per-application hiring solution, exclusive to JazzHR and Lever. Employers set a budget, VONQ sources and screens through 5,000+ channels and 2 million+ monthly postings, and delivers up to 20 dossiers within 20 minutes of qualification.

The mechanic that changes job-seeker behavior:

  • The cap is per role, not per day. A "passing" score does not guarantee a slot.
  • Higher-scored earlier applicants push you out even if you would have ranked well.
  • Volume-blast strategies - 100 applications a week from a job board - are actively worse under this model, because they push your effort into roles where the 20 slots are already filled.
  • Speed on the roles you actually want is the new leverage. A JD posted this morning is a different application than a JD from ten days ago.

A hard cap that turns application timing into a scoring input.

Pairing speed with a resume that already maps to the JD is where an automated tool earns its keep. Refolk drafts the tailored resume and cover letter for a specific posting in the time it used to take to open the JD, which is the difference between applying inside the 48-hour window with a generic CV and applying inside it with one the VONQ agent scores well on the first pass.

Who else runs this format, so you can recognize it in the wild

AI Screening by VONQ is the most visible product because of Lever and JazzHR distribution, but it is not the only one. If a chat or voice interview appears immediately after you click Apply, it is probably one of these vendors.

  • VONQ / AI Screening (Employ) on Lever and JazzHR. 6-minute format, 15+ dimensions, Warden AI audit.
  • Sapia.ai. 5-question chat, 15 to 25 minutes, 25M+ candidate interactions logged.
  • HireVue. Longer video interviews, older format, still common at large enterprises.
  • Pymetrics. Game-based cognitive and behavioral screens.

Named VONQ enterprise customers include Adecco, Randstad, PwC, Danone, and SoftwareOne, so if you are applying at those companies through their Employ-powered stack, assume the 6-minute interview is on.

FAQ

Can I skip the AI screening and go straight to a human?

Not usually. When a Lever or JazzHR customer toggles AI Screening by VONQ on for a role, it runs at the point of application for everyone, and the recruiter's queue is the dossier list. Some employers allow async completion, finishing the interview within a day or two instead of immediately, which is worth asking about if you are ambushed by the prompt. But there is no "email the recruiter directly" bypass that gets you into the shortlist, because the shortlist is generated by the dossier ranking.

Does my resume still matter if the interview is what scores me?

Yes, but as one of three signals, not the whole game. VONQ uses CV signal alongside chat and interview signal to compute the 15+ dimension scores. A weak or generic resume drags the composite even when you nail the interview, and a JD-tailored resume that names the competencies out loud primes the agent to ask the questions you are ready for. That is where a resume tailored per posting - Refolk does this from your own history, so it stays truthful - directly moves the dossier score.

What happens if I refuse the AI interview?

You will almost certainly not be ranked, and therefore not shortlisted. The mechanic is clear: no interview means no transcript, which means no dossier, which means you are not in the pool the recruiter reviews. If you have a strong direct referral inside the company, that path still works. Otherwise, complete the interview.

How do I know if a job I am applying to uses AI Screening by VONQ?

You will not know from the JD. The tell is what happens after you click Apply on a Lever or JazzHR posting: a chat window or voice prompt opens for a structured interview, branded as VONQ or AI Screening, and asks JD-specific competency questions for about six minutes. If you see that, assume everything in this article applies, including the 20-slot CPA+ cutoff if it is a paid-sourcing role.
