Citi's 20K Countdown: The 3,791-to-5 Wealth Resume Rewrite

Citigroup is cutting 20,000 roles by end of 2026. Here's how Wealth at Work MDs and data analysts rewrite Citi-coded resumes for JPM, BofA, and Wells.

If you were a managing director in Citi's Wealth at Work unit or its client data and analysis team last month, the next twelve months are the runway, not the horizon. Jane Fraser has publicly committed to keeping the cuts going through Q4 2026, and the resume you used to move up inside Citi is the exact resume that reads wrong at JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo. This is a translation problem, not a marketing one.

What Citi's 20,000-role plan means for your 2026 job search

Citigroup is on track to eliminate roughly 20,000 net positions by the end of 2026, and the layoffs are now landing on managing directors and senior data staff, not just middle management. The pool competing for the same MD-level wealth and analytics seats at JPM, BofA, and Wells is going to get denser every quarter through 2026.

The trajectory, straight from the filings and coverage:

  • 240,000 employees at end of 2023
  • 229,000 at end of 2024 (about 10,000 gone in a year)
  • Target of roughly 180,000 by end of 2026
  • $600 million reserved for 2025 severance, double the typical amount
  • ~$700 million already spent on 2024 severance
  • $2.5 billion annual savings target, with firmwide expenses landing at $51 to $53 billion by year-end 2026

Fraser's own words are the tell for how much runway is left: "We will continue to reduce our headcount in 2026… changes reflect adjustments… efficiencies we have gained through technology; and progress against our Transformation work, which is nearing Citi's Target State." If you are still inside, the "nearing" is doing a lot of work. If you are already out, that vocabulary is the first thing to strip from your resume.

20,000
Citi roles eliminated by end of 2026

With $600M reserved for 2025 severance alone, the March 2026 round is expected to hit MDs and senior bankers across business lines.

Why "Transformation" is the poisoned keyword on a Citi resume

At Citi, "Transformation" is a badge. At JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, it reads as "spent five years on the org chart instead of the P&L." That single word is the fastest way to get a Citi managing director's resume filed under "internal politics survivor" by a hiring manager who never worked in a 13-layer bank.

Fraser has repeated the phrase in every earnings call and internal memo since January 2024. Every Citi MD's LinkedIn and resume is now stuffed with it. The problem is mechanical:

  • JPM, BofA, and Wells never ran a formal "Transformation" program at Citi's scale, so the word maps to nothing in their JD keyword sets.
  • Fraser is slimming Citi from 13 management layers to 8. That is a ~38% collapse of managerial rungs, and the MDs cut from the middle are the ones whose bullets are most Transformation-heavy.
  • Hiring managers at competitors screen for revenue produced, books moved, and clients retained. "Led Target State workstream" answers none of those.

Every bullet that starts with "Led transformation of…" needs to end with a dollar figure, a client count, or a book size. If your Citi role really was org-design work, own it as operating model or cost takeout, and quantify with the $2.5B savings program as the anchor number your team contributed to. That kind of line-by-line rewrite against a specific competitor JD is exactly the work Refolk does: paste the JPMorgan Private Bank posting, and Refolk rewrites your history against it, swapping Citi-coded phrasing for the operating vocabulary the receiving bank actually uses.

The 3,791-to-5 discoverability gap Citi wealth bankers are walking into

In Refolk's index of professional profiles, a JPMorgan-adjacent "Financial Advisor / Wealth" search returns about 3,791 U.S. records. The same search filtered to the Citi wealth cohort surfaces fewer than five. That is not a talent gap. It is a titling gap, and it is the single most fixable problem on a Citi MD's resume this quarter.

Most Citi wealth MDs list their title as "Managing Director" or "Vice President" with no wealth-vertical keyword attached. Recruiter searches at JPM, BofA, and Wells run on strings like "Wealth Advisor," "Private Banker," "Financial Advisor," and "Portfolio Manager." A resume that says "Managing Director, Citi" ranks nowhere in that index. A resume that says "Private Banker / Wealth Advisor (Managing Director), Citi Wealth at Work" ranks on the first page.

The receiving pool is larger but not softer. Morgan Stanley-titled advisors dominate the wealth-advisor search index, which means Citi private bankers are competing on a playing field where they do not rank at all until they retitle.

Retitling from Private Banker Citi to Wealth Advisor is a discoverability edit, not vanity.

Where a Citi Wealth at Work MD actually lands

Wealth at Work MDs should target JPMorgan Private Bank, BofA Private Bank, Wells Fargo Private Bank, and Goldman Sachs asset and wealth management first, in that order. The reason is not brand prestige. It is client-industry portability.

Wealth at Work serves clients at professional services firms: Am Law 100 partners, Big Four partners, PE general partners, consulting principals. That book is portable in a way lending or deposits are not. The named-industry book is the asset. The Citi platform is not. The appointment of Gonzalo Luchetti as CFO signals a wealth-forward posture at the survivor org, which also means surviving Citi wealth roles are being re-tiered toward UHNW and private banking books - so lead with the premium end of your client list.

Rewrite guidance for the top of the resume:

  1. Lead with client industries, not products. "Advised 40+ Am Law 100 and PE GP relationships" outranks "Managed lending and deposits."
  2. Attach a book-of-business dollar figure to at least one bullet in every role. AUM, credit exposure, or fee revenue, whichever is defensible.
  3. Name specific advisory situations: partnership buy-ins, capital calls, deferred comp structuring, K-1 liquidity events. These are the phrases JPM Private Bank recruiters search on.
  4. Cut anything that sounds like org design unless the target role is Chief of Staff.
  5. Goldman is actively hiring for asset and wealth after Q4 revenue in those units surged 23%. It is a real fourth option, not filler.

The Citi data and analysis pivot is not to another bank

If you were on the client data and analysis team that Citi cut in January 2026, your best resume is not aimed at JPM, BofA, or Wells. Those banks already have entrenched internal data teams and are not net hiring at your level. The natural buyer is a wealth-platform fintech or an institutional data vendor.

The four realistic targets:

  • BlackRock Aladdin for portfolio analytics and risk data roles
  • State Street Alpha for front-to-back platform data
  • Addepar for advisor-platform performance and reporting
  • Envestnet for advisor data, analytics, and Yodlee-adjacent work

The rewrite job here is different. You are not rewriting for a bank recruiter. You are rewriting for a product manager or a head of data at a fintech who wants to see three things:

  1. Named data domains: positions, transactions, performance, tax lot, benchmark, corporate actions
  2. Tools by name: Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, Python, kdb+, Bloomberg, FactSet, MSCI
  3. A shipped artifact: a dashboard used by X advisors, a model that reduced Y latency, a pipeline that saved Z hours

Refolk scores how well you actually fit the JD before you send anything, so you can see which of your Citi bullets are pulling weight for an Addepar or Aladdin role and which are dead keywords. The banking resume rewrite problem is not one rewrite. It is one rewrite per posting, per target, per week.

The 13-to-8 layer collapse and what it does to middle MDs

Middle MDs are the specific casualties of the layer collapse, and their resumes have to pick a lane: C-suite proximity or hands-on deal execution. Claiming both is the fastest way to get filtered out.

Going from 13 layers to 8 removes about 38% of managerial rungs. The MDs at the top three layers survive as executive leadership. The MDs at the bottom three survive as deal or client operators. Everyone in the middle five, "manager of managers," is the demographic Fraser is actually removing.

If your Citi resume reads like "led team of 45 across four regions coordinating with product, risk, and compliance," you are in the collapsed middle. Two rewrites work, one does not:

  • Executive lane: reframe as strategy, capital allocation, or business-line P&L ownership. Attach the biggest number you can defend. Target Chief of Staff, COO, or Head of X roles.
  • Operator lane: strip the org-chart bullets entirely and rebuild around named deals, named clients, and revenue produced. Target senior banker, senior advisor, or senior portfolio manager roles.
  • The middle rewrite that fails: keeping both. Hiring managers read it as "does neither."

One more red flag worth naming. Some Citi senior managers have reportedly secured internal transfers to other divisions ahead of the next round. On a resume, a lateral move dated within the last twelve months at Citi reads to external recruiters as "was about to be cut." Address it directly in the cover letter with a one-line reason, or expect the question in every screen. Refolk drafts the cover letter alongside the tailored resume, which is where that one-line reason belongs, phrased in a way that neutralizes the flag instead of amplifying it.

The 12-month calendar to work backwards from

Work backwards from March 2026 and Q4 2026, the two announced pressure points. That gives you two clean sprint windows to have a competitive resume, portfolio, and pipeline in place.

  • Now through end of Q1 2026: retitle, rewrite, and re-index. The 3,791-to-5 discoverability gap closes here, not later.
  • March 2026: the announced next round of MD and senior cuts. Recruiters at JPM, BofA, Wells, and Goldman will be watching Citi headlines and inbounding actively. Be searchable before the news breaks.
  • Q2 to Q3 2026: interview cycles run long at private banks. Expect four to six rounds. Book the introductions now.
  • Q4 2026: the final Citi round tied to Target State. If you have not landed by August, tighten the search to the four Goldman and fintech targets where hiring is actively net-positive.

The Jersey City campus lost 67 employees on December 27 and 28, 2025 per WARN filings. That is the tempo. The cuts arrive between quarters, on quiet days, in named locations. A resume that is not already tailored and scored against target postings when the notice lands loses two to three weeks of runway to the rewrite itself.

FAQ

How do I rewrite a Citi "Transformation" bullet for JPMorgan?

Strip the word entirely and rebuild the bullet around what the work actually produced. If it was cost takeout, attach a dollar figure and tie it to Citi's $2.5B savings program. If it was operating model, call it operating model design and name the business line it served. If it was client-facing, lead with the client outcome. JPM, BofA, and Wells screen for revenue, cost, and client metrics. "Transformation" reads as none of those, and it is the single fastest filter to fail on a financial services layoff resume in 2026.

Should a Citi Wealth at Work MD target Morgan Stanley too?

Morgan Stanley is worth including but not leading with. The advisor-title index is already dominated by Morgan Stanley profiles, so you are competing against incumbents on their home turf. JPMorgan Private Bank, BofA Private Bank, Wells Fargo Private Bank, and Goldman Sachs asset and wealth management are stronger initial targets because they are actively rebuilding advisor rosters against Morgan Stanley, which makes a Citi private banker with a named professional-services book more attractive, not less.

What if I already took an internal Citi transfer in the last six months?

Address it in the cover letter in one line, before the recruiter has to ask. Frame the transfer around a specific skill or client segment you wanted to build, not around avoiding a cut. External recruiters at JPM and BofA will otherwise assume the worst, and a same-firm lateral dated late 2025 or early 2026 is now a known signal.

How many versions of my resume do I actually need?

At least three, and probably four. One for private bank and wealth advisor roles at JPM, BofA, Wells, and Goldman. One for asset and wealth management platform roles at BlackRock, State Street, and the fintechs. One for corporate strategy or Chief of Staff roles if you are taking the executive lane out of the layer collapse. And a fourth for any specific business-line role (commercial banking, markets, TTS) you have a real network in. Each one gets tailored per posting, not written once and reused.
